What are the chances of a major ass whuppin' for almost all of these games? 70%? What;s the point if we can't beat Colgate? I think there may be a number of points: (1) good for recruiting as many athletes want to test themselves against tough opponents; (2) raises the profile of the program--increases brand awareness; (3) we will likely receive a nice check from each opponent--$$ we can use to advance the program; (4) as our program improves we will have the chance to spring an upset

If you are afraid to play against BC or any other BCS team, you might as well quit playing football and join the rowing team. Our players want these games. These games are good for the program. Playing against competition like BC will make us better, which will presumably carry over into the league.

Of course, even if HC takes three "whuppins'" there is still the point of improved play, team bonding and overall program improvement. After all, two games ago HC was slaughtered by Fordham at Yankee Stadium. Last year many of the same players went to Fordham and pounded the Rams. Things change. Stronger opponents and strong HC recruiting could make the change one for the better.

While I would prefer a pay date with Northwestern over Indiana ( alum/recruiting area reasons ), the game with Maryland in D.C. is good for future recruiting in what is a fertile area....albeit with heavy competition.
And Chesney strikes me as a guy somewhat similar to Rick Carter, who upon learning/being asked by Brooks about Bear Bryant's interest in playing HC said...." Give me 3 years and we'll be ready ".
( Brooks declined Bryant's overture and Bama wound up playing BC in Foxboro )
GO CROSS GO !

I'd be surprised if the BC game didn't draw relatively well (say 30K+ at least) given decent weather etc. Be interesting to see what kind of crowd does go. I know interest in the game is pretty high amongst my age cohort with many parties, get-togethers etc already being planned around the game. Than again, it's been 30+ years since these two fine institutions (said through gritted teeth) have met on the gridiron and you'd have to be in your late 40s (at the youngest) to have any memory of this football rivalry.

Conversely, those of us who were born before 1950 may also have no "memory of this football rivalry" . . . . . or what we had for dinner last night.

Uh, not always . . . . sometimes the "early bird special" starts earlier. BTW, if you find yourself in RI on a Wednesday, take advantage of the "senior Wednesday" at Showcase Cinemas to see first run movies at bargain prices.

The notion of HC playing really big time teams in football makes no sense at all to me, even if "opportunities" to do so were to become available. Our progress needs to follow this path: -- Become a dominant PL school; -- While doing so, beat our out of conference FBS opponents (i.e., the Ivies and CAA) consistently; -- Schedule lower level FCS schools, play well against them, and even win a few games; -- Once those mountains have been climbed, decide whether to try for CAA membership...about as high as we can realistically hope to go.
The lower level FCS schools I have in mind are places like Army, Navy, Air Force, Duke, UVa, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Northwestern, UConn, UMass, and, yes, BC from time to time for old times sake. (I recognize that there will be years when some of these programs will be better than "lower level". But they are (for the most part) institutions that appear to place some value on education... as HC does...against which we can hopefully play reasonably well.)
It's a tall mountain to climb by any measure. Good luck to Coach Chesney and HC's 2018 football team as we start the climb out of the hole bequeathed to us by Tom Gilmore...among many others on Mt. St. James, no doubt.

Not sure it’s the lowest ebb but it’s pretty low. 2-9, 3-9, 4-8, 6-5, 4-7, 4-7. The fact that we could have games like the UNH game last year makes the overall record and some of the ridiculous losses all the more maddening.

I think it is understood that one can be a pretty dreadful program in a pretty deep hole heading even deeper and still play a very good game (UNH), a very good half (UConn), a very good series, or run a very good play now and again.
Although jkh67 switched the terms FCS (I-AA) and FBS (I-A) his logic is compelling. And our path to our goal (a nationally competitive FCS program) starts with dominating our PL competition. That starts with a more effective coach (TBD, impression is that is a check), better facilities (check), and perhaps most importantly, better players than our PL competition (TBD). IMHO the purple filter effect is strongest on this board when looking at recruits. If, at the end of three years, we are dominating all of the PL teams then we will know we are moving towards our goal.

Given the weakness of the PL in national FCS standings, we would have to dominate the PL as a threshold matter. I think that is logical. (Logical and realistic can be miles apart.)

It would be nice if we were able to have some of those games at home. BC, Umass or even Uconn etc. Once upon a time, Coach Gibbons said something about a rule that said D-I couldn't play at D-II (or D-III) (tournaments excluded) when asked about throwing Assumption a game at their place. I wouldn't be shocked if there was something similar for BCS vs FCS

There was one example recently where Army played at Yale to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Yale Bowl.
Practically speaking, however, even if there is no rule, it is an issue of finances. FCS teams play an FBS opponent because it provides a payday to help cover the costs of the program. FCS teams cannot pay what would be required to have an FBS team come to an FCS site.

I wouldn't be shocked if there was something similar for BCS vs FCS The rule Gibbons cited pertains to exhibitions. I actually asked the same question on the board myself, asking why we don't occasionally play the Assumption basketball exhibitions on the road as a sort of Worcester outreach. Division I teams cannot play EXHIBITION games against lower division schools on the road. If our men's or women's team played AT Assumption, it would have to be a regular season game. And there would be no reason for HC waste a non-con regular season game on Assumption when the exhibition match-up is already a given year after year. There is no rule stopping FBS football schools from playing road games against FCS. As breezy pointed out, it just very rarely makes financial sense for this to happen. Prior to Army-Yale in New Haven in 2014, it bad been 12 years since the last time an FBS team went on the road against an FCS (Idaho @ Montana I think). Not to mention, a game against an FCS opponent is supposed to be a reasonably easy win out of the 6 wins needed to qualify for a bowl game. Very little incentive to play what's supposed to be one of your easier games on the schedule on the road and risk losing one of those six potential wins. I would imagine Army @ Yale was a guarantee game where the Cadets got a cut of the gate -- since probably 60,000 tickets were sold and likely marked up for event, AWP would have made out much better financially than say UMass or BC would in the event of a 23,000 sellout at Fitton. UMass would still probably only draw 12-15K here in Worcester, anyhow.

With you guys being independent and the Patriot League schedule allowing 5 OOC games, it's not impossible that we meet before five years are up.
