PL NCAA WLAX SUCCESS EXPOSES ?’s ABOUT PL/HC FIT
There are many areas in which the PL demonstrates that it’s is no longer the appropriate conference for HC. One can gain an important insight into one of these key areas through reading about the Navy and Loyola coaches responsible for their recent success in the WLAX NCAA tournament: Navy making it to the Final Four in 2017 and the winner of Sunday’s Navy-Loyola match up ( see link at the end of this post ) making it to the Elite Eight in 2018.
Both of these highly compensated 10 + year veterans of their current Head Coaching positions are national legends. ( No hyperbole here....read the bios. ) 1. Loyola’s Jen Adams www.loyolagreyhounds.com/sports/w-lacros/mtt/jen_adams_353710.html 2. Navy’s Cindy Timchal www.navysports.com/sports/w-lacros/mtt/cindy_timchal_261563.html. If you read their bios, you’ll understand why they could coach at any of the 115 Div. 1 schools in any conference in the country offering WLAX. Both of these PL institutions had strategic commitments for their WLAX programs when these women were hired. WLAX is only exceeded by basketball as the most important women’s sport in the NCAA.
In contrast, HC’s strategy in this important sport is representative of HC and ADNP’s approach ( You choose: in all sports ? iust the olympic sports ? ) in what is supposed to be HC's athletic renaissance period. Sporting an RPI of 88 in 2016 ( now 68 ) HC created a splash announcing the hire of Amanda.Belichtck. www.goholycross.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=33100&ATCLID=210240578 The substantive contrast to a real coaching pedigree couldn’t be more striking. Her claim to fame was a 2 year Head Coaching gig in Div 3, registering an undistinguished record. ADNP played up her other accomplishment: claim to being connected to an important football coaching legacy. Like much of ADNP’s PR smoke about his hires, HC, throughout it athletic renaissance, is ending up getting what it's paying for. ADNP's limitations in effecting performance becomes more transparent by the season. And HC's pursuit of dominating the PL on its way to a more competitive conference is exposed for what it is: A pipe dream.
There’s a dearth of info on Crossports supporting the assertion that HC will dominate the PL in our lifetime on its way to upgrading to a more competitive conference. There's very little information on Crossports about the athletic success of other PL members. So, why does HC continue to beat itself up in the PL ? It’s as if Crossposts posters believe the competitiveness of the PL was put on hold while HC went into a long slumber on its athletic program. Much is made on this board about HC’s handicaps in schollies. May I suggest a comparative perusal of the pedigrees and institutional tenures of the PL coaches in each M’s and W’s sport will reveal that HC is a fish out of water in the PL . The WLAX coaching/success contrast may be the extreme. But, the PL/HC contrast holds true across the majority of sports.
Why does HC maintain the pretense that subjecting itself to the AI by remaining a PL member enhances its brand ? It’s easy to question why HC, with a test optional admissions policy and 40 per cent acceptance rate continiues to fit in with institutions in the PL . HC is over-burdening itself and some conference re-calibration sideways or downward needs to happen soon.
Without analyzing each of the areas indicating the PL/HC fit has deteriorated, it’s key to face the hard truth. HC is never going to dominate the PL - and it’s time to find a less competitive conference or arrangement more compatible with its brand today.
