Our softball program has been down for a long time without a dominant pitcher - well, it looks like we have a very good incoming pitcher recruit in the fall: Kelly Nelson of Norton H.S. Excerpts from a recent article in the Globe:
What constitutes a successful senior year?
Setting a state record for career strikeouts in the circle, with 1,245 and counting? Being elected vice president of your class? Or even getting a call to pitch for the national women’s softball team of Ireland on the road to the 2020 Olympic Games?
The Globe’s reigning Division 2 Player of the Year, she is headed to Holy Cross in the fall. She will make her international debut for Team Ireland this summer at the U19 and U22 European Championships in Italy and Slovakia, respectively. Her grandmother was born in Ireland and Nelson recently applied for, and gained, dual citzenship.
And even as a team captain, Nelson will not shy away from cleaning up after home games or carrying equipment on the bus for road games. In the classroom, Nelson finished among the top of her class and was a member of the National Honor Society.
“She’s the perfect kid,” Lizotte said. “Academically she pushes herself the same way she does athletically in her clubs or AP classes. I’m proud of her as a player, but more proud of her as a person.”

A great pitcher makes all the difference in softball as a softball pitcher can throw game after game unlike in baseball. Boston University's Ali DuBois was the starting pitcher in 39 of the team's 59 games and went 28-8 for the season. Raeanne Geffert started 31 of Bucknell's 51 games and went 18-12. HC had no dominant starting pitcher this season with one starter going 4-11, another 8-13, and the third 0-6. Let's see what Kelly Nelson can do for us.

The different arm motion is a game changer. I have seen high school softball teams win over 30 games with one pitcher (in a shorter high school season). Can that be done on a college level?
