The Leopards beat Fordham 21-13 last week and after playing us, they have to travel to West Point to play the Cadets of AWP. They will probably be focused on our game because they believe it is one they can win. Massey has HC as a 9 point favorite (26-17) and gives the Crusaders a 76% Chance for a win. BTW: to see what I would hear, I asked Alexa today for the results of the Holy Cross game. Here is her answer: "Yesterday the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated Lehigh 56-0. They will play at Lafayette on Saturday." If Alexa knows of HC and that we are the Crusaders, we may be starting to get some "national" attention.

BTW: The Patriot League (in Massey Composite Ranks) is ranked as the 9th FCS Conference - not as the worst. (I omitted the "FCS Independents" since they are not a conference) 1. Colonial 2. Missouri Valley 3. Ivy League 4. Big Sky 5. Southern 6. Southland 7. Ohio Valley 8. Big South 9. PATRIOT LEAGUE 10. Mid-Eastern AC 11. Northeast 12. Southwestern AC 13. Pioneer

From the Lafayette Football site: Leopards Capture Second Straight Patriot League Win
BRONX, N.Y. – Lafayette used a potent running attack to post its second straight Patriot League victory, rolling up a season-high 280 rushing yards in a 21-13 final at Fordham on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Selwyn Simpson (12-112) and C.J. Amill (25-133) took turns hammering at the Fordham defense and combined for all three scores in the game. The Leopard defense turned in a dominating performance, holding Fordham to minus-20 rushing yards and just 122 total yards in the game which ended with a second-half shutout.
The weather was a factor for both teams with wind gusts approaching 30 miles per hour to accompany rain most of the afternoon. Accordingly, the Leopards kept the ball on the ground, running 58 times while passing just nine. Fordham (1-7, 1-2) drew first blood in the second quarter. Just before the end of the opening stanza, the Rams converted a 4th-and-1 at the Leopard 29 on a four-yard rush by Naim Mayfield. A 20-yard toss from Tim DeMorat (15-32-2 for 142) to Hunter Harris set up the scoring play. DeMorat hit Isaiah Searight for an eight-yard TD toss just a minute into the second quarter. Things picked up for the Leopards on their next possession. Lafayette dialed up the run eight straight plays on carries by Amill, Sean O'Malley and Simpson. The final carry was a 38-yard breakaway by Simpson to the left side to knot the game at 7-7 with 9:48 left in the first half.
The Leopards' first turnover came four minutes later and proved costly. A 66-yard wind-aided punt had pinned Lafayette at its own goal line. O'Malley fumbled on a run and the Rams took over at the four-yard line. DeMorat hit Austin Longi for a four-yard TD pass and a 13-7 lead after the snap on the PAT was mishandled. Lafayette's defense came up with its own turnover when freshman Colin Hurlbrink recovered a fumble by DeMorat at the Fordham 39-yard line. Initially, ruled down, the play was reviewed and the officials determined that DeMorat didn't have possession of the ball. The offense took advantage. Four straight runs, two by Nick Pearson and two by Amill, manufactured the go-ahead score. Amill ran 31 yards toward the visitor's sideline and in for the score. Jeffrey Kordenbrock's PAT was good and Lafayette led 14-13 at halftime.
Lafayette's 145 yards in the first half surpassed its single-game high entering the contest (134 vs. Bucknell on Oct. 20) while the defense held Fordham to minus-15 on the ground in the opening 30 minutes. Lafayette got the ball against the wind to start the second half. The offense picked up two first downs before punting. Jacob Bissell unleashed a 42-yard punt into the wind that rolled to the Fordham three-yard line.
The defense forced its own punt Lafayette took over near midfield. The running game continued to churn out the yards. Simpson took off for a 51-yard run that set up his one-yard touchdown run two plays later. Lafayette led 21-13 with 8:26 left in the third quarter. With 5:50 left in the fourth, the Leopards' defense continued to pressure DeMorat. No. 99 Malik Hamm broke through for his third sack of the game which forced a Fordham punt. It was the first time since Nov. 19, 2016 that a Lafayette player managed three sacks in a game when No. 99 Robin Cepeda accomplished the feat.
The Leopards' offense stayed on the ground, settling for a 46-yard field-goal attempt by Kordenbrock that was short and left of the upright in the misting rain.
Fordham took over at the Lafayette 29-yard line with 2:47 left in the game and no timeouts. The Rams picked up one first down before defensive end Keith Earle dropped back off the line and picked off DeMorat for the Leopards' second interception of the game (first of Earle's career). Earle and Eric Mitchell combined to give Lafayette its first two-interception day of the season.
Lafayette (3-5, 2-2) returns home to host Holy Cross which is coming off a 56-0 lashing of Holy Cross. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.

Whatever else may be said of Lafayette, proofreading is apparently not their strong suit.

The Lafayette SID and his staff need to proofread their content before release, and after it has been promoted to their release site. Hope they are notified of the error.

Should we offer to let them use our HC proofreaders who have never made this kind of mistake?

Just looked at Laf's results/stats....
HC -9 @ Laf is puzzling....at best this looks like a toss-up or HC +3 to me.
Be wary....last Saturday wasn't an abracatabra turn around.

Last year's game was a very close loss. I am not looking forward to any more "close" defeats this year. I think that some of our key position players are coming into their own, but it is the linemen (on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball) who will IMHO make the biggest difference in this game. A key turnover either way could decide the winner.
The number of CROSSPORTS selections of Lafayette this week shows that there are HC fans who still need to be convinced.

Hamm is someone that HC will have to counter throughout the game. He is making quite an impact as a freshman. CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Malik Hamm has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week following a dominating performance at Fordham on Oct. 27. Hamm rang up three sacks for a loss of 26 yards in Lafayette's 21-13 conference victory over the Rams. The defensive end held Fordham to minus-20 rushing yards on the afternoon and shut out Fordham in the second half, a team that had scored 41 points the week prior. (All by himself? ) A starter in six games this season, Hamm leads the Patriot League with 7.5 sacks and is second among conference players in tackles for loss at 13.0. He has 39 tackles on the season, two forced fumbles and one fumble return of 22 yards. His outstanding play has earned him a place on the watch list for the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award which has been presented to the top FCS freshman since 2011. Hamm and the Leopards' defense will face a tough task on Saturday when Holy Cross comes to Fisher Stadium. The Crusaders are coming off a 56-0 shutout of Lehigh that included a 208-yard rushing day by Domenic Cozier.

There is absolutely no doubt that a talented frosh can come in and tear up the Patriot League. When we see our frosh doing that (especially at the speed/skill positions but possibly at other positions as well ) we'll know we are recruiting at a level sufficient to meet our goal (repeated PL championships and annual forays into the playoffs).

Weather looks decent, if not great, tomorrow. Morning rain (Pards have a turf field) ending early...50s, some wind 15-25...shouldn't be too much of a factah.
Not sure what to make of Laffy...seen pieces of a couple games. Bettah D than O...all 3 wins are against fairly weak teams (CCSU, Bucky, Fordham). A game we should win imo if we play a solid game etc.

Holy Cross can score. Lafayette can not. Their offense has woken some recently and it’s not as bad as Lehigh’s defense but a defeat today would be a big step back.

Preview from the Lafayette board:
Run...Run...Run: On a day that wasn't conducive to passing, Lafayette featured its running game...58 times to be exact (the most runs since 63 on Sept. 6, 2008). Senior RB CJ Amill (25-133) and sophomore RB Selwyn Simpson (12-112) each carried for 100-plus yards, nearly two years to the day of the last time a Leopard ballcarrier broke the century mark. Simpson finished with scores of one and 38 yards and also added a 51-yard carry (Lafayette's longest play from scrimmage in 2018), while Amill's 31-yard touchdown was his longest run of the day. It was the first time since Nov. 3, 2012 that two Lafayette backs (Ross Scheuerman 142, Vaughn Hebron 119) managed 100 yards or more in the same game.
Run A Little More: Lafayette churned out a season-best 280 rushing yards, surpassing its previous game-high of 138 (Bucknell) in the first half at Fordham. It was the most rushing yards since the Leopards' 309 yards (304 by Ross Scheuerman) over Lehigh on Nov. 22, 2014 in Yankee Stadium.
A Passing Fancy: The Leopards' offense attempted nine passes (completing four) at Fordham, the fewest passing attempts since Sept. 2, 2006 (8 vs. Sacred Heart).
Rookie of the Week: Freshman Malik Hamm is the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week following a dominating performance at Fordham. Hamm rang up three sacks for a loss of 26 yards. The last player to register three sacks in a game also wore No. 99. Robin Cepeda had three vs. Lehigh on Nov. 19, 2016. A starter in six games, Hamm leads the Patriot League with 7.5 sacks (13th in the nation) and is second in tackles for loss at 13.0 (sixth in the nation). He has 39 tackles on the season, two forced fumbles and one fumble return of 22 yards.
Stingy Second Half: Lafayette's defense held Fordham to minus-20 rushing yards and shut out the Rams in the second half, a week after they scored 41 points vs. Bryant. It was the second time this season that Luke Thompson's defense pitched a second-half shutout, also managing it against Georgetown. The half was highlighted by fourth-quarter interceptions from Eric Mitchell and Keith Earle.
Running the Ball + Stopping the Run = W's: Lafayette's defense held Bucknell to minus-two (-2) rushing yards, piling up 47 negative yards on six tackles for loss. By contrast, the Leopard offense saw six ball carriers combining to run for 138 yards. Against Fordham, Lafayette rushed for a season-high 280 yards and limited Bucknell to minus-20 (-20) on the ground thanks to 7.0 tackles for a loss of 39 yards.
Hamm and Rice Award: Freshman DE Malik Hamm is on the watch list for the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award. The award, named after the Hall of Fame wide receiver, has been presented to the top FCS freshman since 2011. Hamm earned his first collegiate start at Delaware, registering five tackles with three tackles for a loss and a sack in his breakout game. He sacked the Delaware QB, stripped him of the ball, recovered the fumble and ran it back for 22 yards.
Time Of Possession: In the first four games of 2018, Lafayette opponents held time of possession differentials of 7, 17, 4 and 15 minutes, while in the last four games Lafayette has have advantages of 4, 4, 11 and 17 minutes. (YES, that means they had the ball for 17 minutes more than Fordham.)
On the Line: The offensive line under assistant coach Gordie Sammis leads the Patriot League in sacks allowed (1.38 per game) and tackles for loss allowed (5.9 per game). The group is headed by senior captain Kevin Zataveski from his center position.
Kick-off Returns: Lafayette is ranked 21st nationally and first in the Patriot League for kick-off returns, averaging 24.3 yards per try. J.J. Younger averages 27.7 yards per return to lead the Patriot League (10th in the nation), while CJ Amill checks in at 21.8 yards per return and was an All-Patriot League First-Team selection at return specialist in 2017 when he racked up 558 kick return yards (the eighth most in a season in Lafayette history).
Moving Up: With 376 career completions, soph. QB Sean O'Malley needs 10 more to take over eighth place in school history currently occupied by Shawn McHale '97 (386 from 1994-96). In terms of career passing yards, O'Malley has 3,314, ranking 10th all-time at Lafayette. He needs 391 yards to take over ninth place held by Andrew Shoop '13 (3,705 in 2010-12).
The Opponent: Holy Cross comes into Saturday's matchup fresh off a 56-0 beat down of Lehigh in Worcester, Mass. It was the second win for the Crusaders who also own a victory over Yale with losses coming to Colgate (24-17), Dartmouth, Bucknell (19-16), New Hampshire and Harvard. Against Lehigh, junior RB Domenic Cozier piled up 208 rushing yards with a TD to go along with 118 and a TD from classmate Miles Alexander. Senior QB Geoff Wade is completing 61 percent of his passes (100-165) with 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions. His favorite targets are seniors Martin Dorsey (31-385, 5 TD) and Blaise Bell (25-236). Senior LB Ryan Brady leads the Patriot League with 88 tackles and has managed 11 TFL. The Crusaders are coached by Bob Chesney (Dickinson '00) who is in his first season at Holy Cross after coaching five seasons at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. and three seasons at Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I.

If we can contain Lafayette's DE Malik Hamm, I think it can be a good day offensively for HC. However, that may be a big task!
