Seems I missed the announcement, but when did Bob retire from calling the women's games ? I see that Steve Vechionne is the play-by-play man this season. Where did he come from ?

Bob is not in the best of health unfortunately. Steve is a western Mass guy. Called the games for the NECBL club in Holyoke this past season.

Bill Gibbons announced that Bob would not be coming back this season at the coach's night.

What a career Bob had. Before calling Crusader games he broadcast Celtics games on Channel 27 with Bob Cousy as his color guy. He billed the duo as Mr. Basketball and Mr. Entertainment. He used to say he broadcast Holy Cross, the Worcester Counts (minor league basketball) and the Boston Celtics ... unfortunately in the wrong order.

I remember Cooz and Fouracre doing HC on ch 27. I can't say I ever recall Fouracre doing the Celts or the Celts being on CH 27. Must be before my time

File under the things you learn on Crossports via Wikipedia follow-up ... It would appear that channel 27 (WSMW) held the Celtics' broadcast rights in the 1971-72 season. Read the history section here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WUNIAnd Bob Fouracre's wikipedia page indicates he called the Celtics games for 2 seasons (1971 - 1973) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Fouracre

Some other great names on there. I do remember Marty Glickman doing a game or two in the 60s. Have absolutely no recollection of Harry Caray doing a Celts broadcast; most likely because in 1964-65 I knew no one who had a TV capable of picking up UHF broadcasts.

Oh, yes, my best recollection of a Cousy/HC Broadcast was when he staged a walkout.
The situation was he had a plane to catch and was only going to be on the broadcast for a half or so. So he and 4acre made it look like 4acre said something to insult him and he stormed off.

Probably right although Ch 27 telecasts were more in the frequency of 4-5 a year versus every game until HC got good 2-3 years later. Some Assumption games too, remember watching them play in the D2 Elite 8 versus SW Louisiana (now UL Lafayette) , Eastern Michigan (the Ice Man!) and whatever HBC school Marvin "The Human Eraser" Webster was on.

The Human Eraser went to Morgan State and is that school's lone NBA player Couldn't remember and too lazy yesterday to look it up. Every team AC lost to in their glory years of Elite 8 appearances moved up to D1, in most cases, the year after they played them.

I wish him well, of course.
About 5-10 years ago he was doing a HC football game, a close contest.
Someone fumbled and Bob said the following in so many words: "the ball is on the ground, there's a big pileup, WHO'S GOT IT???. We'll tell you after this 60 second break".
Never knew to blame him or his producer/engineer for that one, but I wanted to call in an pinpointed air strike on the broadcast booth.

"There will never be another broadcaster like Bob Fouracre", said Bill Gibbons -- You can say that again ! (the good, the bad and the ugly) If nothing else, he was unique

Reminds me of one of the best compliments I ever got. As a higher level manager, one of my subordinate managers was retiring after many years. I was asked to give a little farewell speech about him. Let's just say, he wasn't the most loved guy whether by peers or his own subordinates. When I was finished with my speech, one of the retiring manager's subordinates came up to me and said "Wow. When I die, I want you to do my eulogy!"

I do hope he comes back to the Hart Center for one last game so he can be properly honored.

I was just thinking to myself (often, not a good idea ) what a constant Mr E was for much of my 50+ years on this mortal coil. Remember watching HC hoop and football games on a "snowy" black&white TV with a rabbit eared antennae in the early/mid 1970s to watching/listening to his broadcasts on this very laptop. Here's to a long, enjoyable retirement for Mr E!!!

Another guy like that would be Chris Clark. PC (and URI for a couple years when his station lost the PC contract) radio and tv broadcaster (they did simulcasts, so both at the same time!) starting in the late 50s until the Big East era started. Like Bob F., although his broadcasts were not over-the-top biased, you never heard a bad word about the Friars. First college hoop games I remember as a little kid, alternating between snowy Channel 10 and even snowier Channel 12. One of those games, of course, was the famous NIT game with Holy Cross. Clark loved to call the players by their first name, like "Ernie with the ball, over to Kevin, down low to Marvin..."; at least the home team. He also loved to say the distance he thought jumpers came from, including halves, like "Jimmy from 17 1/2 feet". He is in some kind of PC ring of honor news.providence.edu/glory-and-honor-friar-legends-forever-induction. Maybe there should be something at the Hart dedicated to him or, as others have said, at least a little ceremony. And it would be very fitting (and "entertaining" too, I'm sure) if Mr. Basketball were able to participate in it!

We used to hate Chris Clark as kids lol....probably jealousy more than anything at that time, Ernie D, Mahhvin B etc.....we lived in PC country and they were the enemy!!! Probably a helluva guy and from memory, was a good broadcaster...I wondah when he last did PC games regularly?

From what I could gather, he was more or less a casualty of the formulation of the Big East as the games gravitated to cable. Last mention of him doing games was early 80s.
Ironically, the last time I saw him, given that he was so associated with PC and the state or RI in general, was at the then-Centrum at the NCAAs in the early 90s. And his beloved Friars weren't even playing. Did not look particularly healthy but he lived another 10-12 years.
