Seems like a real grind to switch to the NBA at age 66. All those games and travel. Wonder how long he'll do it for. No buses. No recruiting throughout the year. No making sure kids are staying out of trouble / eligible. I think Beilein will adapt well.

You may not have to recruit, but you still have to deal with irresponsible young men.and their posses and agents

...and no one can play hard for 82 games, then up to 28 playoff games. Just not possible. Makes coaching decisions even more difficult when there genuinely is nothing left in a player's tank.

When Charlie Weis went from the NFL to head coach of ND he said the reduced time commitment was a welcome relief because the NCAA limited how long practices could be, etc.

Beilein guaranteed big money for five years then he retires. Great retirement fund.

If Beilein does not already have enough $$$ for 5 retirement funds he has been mismanaging his investments

Good for him. He's put the time in as an assistant. Needs a George Blaney type around, IMHO.

I don't think it is a good decision at all.
Howard would have been better served bringing Martelli in as some sort of an advisor or "head of player development" (a la Sean Kearney) where he could help with game prep and X's and O's, but I'm shocked he would want 64-year old Phil Martelli out on the recruiting trail over a younger guy. Those are pretty valuable spots because you can only have the three assistants recruit.

I believe that someone of Martelli’s experience would not take anything less than a full assistant position. Chris Mullin hired mostly recruiters who got him enough talent, but only little experienced Gary St. Jean to figure the Xs and Os. Did not work out very well. Howard, Easley and their connections are enough to recruit good players. Martelli can identify talent and let the others close the deals.

Perhaps Martelli has developed skill over the years in reading a player and his family and that can be paired with a younger assistant's energy and vitality, unless only one coach can have contact with a particular recruit and his family under NCAA rules. As a young person I was paired with an old WWII vet who had had a heart attack and two strokes. I did all the work but he read people's buying signals that went right by me. It was a great combination...until he had the big one.

As you will recall, St. John's had Gene Keady in the role suggested by SOV during Lavin's tenure as coach =- just prior to Mullin. He was classified as an adviser to the head coach and sat on the bench - but did not directly coach the players. And he didn't have any involvement in recruiting. Of course Keady was a bit older than Martelli when he assumed that role.

Martelli has a big ego and is a bit of a prima dona wanting to always be the center of attention. Will be interesting to see how he handles being second banana.

I guess his last few seasons would have humbled him a bit. I think he will be happy having a prominent role at such a prestigious hoops school.

Humble is not in his vocabulary. Glad I will no longer have to see him in the A-10. Never cared for the man.

For those who have a hard time keeping track of all the different jobs, this is not a coaching position. Can help the head coach but cannot recruit and can't coach players directly, either in practice or during games.

The rule that only the three full-time assistants are allowed to coach players is followed by about 0% of teams.

Bet Wade made Nickelberry a strong-ass offer.

Padding the payroll with this extra position will generate exactly no additional wins. Pretty soon various team hangers on-ers will start lining the first row of bleachers behind the bench when that gets too crowded...all in their "Little Ricky" suits.
