Team USA gets going tonight with A match vs New Zealand in women's soccer at 6:00. I was surprised to learn today that the US did not qualify in men's soccer.

The women looked good in their 2-0 win. I also did not realize the men had not qualified.

In fact, its the second time in a row that the US men have failed to qualify for the Olympics. This is a U23 tournament so it would seem to demonstrate that US Soccer has failed to figure out how to develop young talent. It started its Academy program in 2007 and, despite upsetting high school soccer around the country, this initiative has not even developed enough talent to reach the Olympics.

Let's see if we can get this discussion going. To channel Linda Richman, I'll give you a topic: Greater display of dominance -- Tiger Woods from 1997-2002, or Katie Ledecky's recent run through the international swimming schedule (click to enlarge)? Attachment Deleted

How about Michael Phelps --19 gold medals !! In terms of breadth of his skillset and his staying power, Phelps is obviously more impressive. But when it comes to Ledecky's events, I honestly can't think of another athlete who is so dominant over her competitors that the actual race/game/match is just a formality. That's where Ledecky is in the 400 and 800 free (and the 1500 in non-Olympic tournaments). There is no question that she's going to win, just by how much. Tonight's 200 is the only event that anyone else even has a chance against her.

I'll suggest Edwin Moses who won dozens of high level 400 meter high hurdles races in a row--I think he went for years without losing. Another would have to be Herb Elliott --I believe the story on him is that this great miler from Australia (correction-not NZ) never lost a race in his adult career--I'll have to check that out to see if that's legend or truth. Still you have a great case with Ledecky

Here's the stats on Edwin Moses--from 1977 to 1987 he won 107 consecutive high hurdles finals, including setting the world record four times. He won gold in 76 and 84; of course we had the boycott in 1980 or he would have likely won that hold. Those of us who went to the HC vs Southern NCAA tournament game in Dayton travelled on Edwin Moses Blvd as his home town named a street after him...

Still you have a great case with Ledecky Moses is a great reference. Not sure he measures up to Ledecky when you factor in margin of victory though. As Rowdy Gaines said on Sunday night, Leah Smith (the American who won the bronze) once said that she was so thrilled to still be in eyesight of Ledecky's feet when she won a recent race. The girl was celebrating before anyone else even finished on Sunday.

Incredible to see a teammate who won 12 olympic medals (TWELVE) be practically ignored. No wonder he colored his hair...something to get attention?

I just watched the women's 4 X 200 free style relay--very exciting. Katie Ledecky swam the 4th leg and was about 1/2 length behind when she started, but the announcers basically said the race was over and, sure enough, the US won by about a length with her powerful finish

IMO there is better Olympic coverage than past years when the broadcast consisted of far too many segments on the personal stories of athletes that few people cared about from teams in which even fewer people had an interest. Getting to see real time competition (not network summaries that fragmented the events and made them almost unwatchable) is also a plus.
hc87, you apparently at least watched some of the Olympics to determine they were boring. Some do not even do that. I understand that many do not care to watch the Olympics but I am surprised that so many need to take the time to tell many others about their dislike of the event. The lack of polish and the many problems with Brazil's Olympic effort and sites do take away from some events, but I think this spectacle is still worth a watch. How else would I have had a chance to see the Fiji rugby team I have read about for some time?

Did the Fijians do the Haaka dance ( or is it the Kiwis/all Blacks who do that?)
