VerbalComitts.com says he will transfer. A shame because it is his team. He makes it go.

Maybe he had to enter the portal to explore a potential plan B, but the chances of actually transferring is less than 100%?

Of course there could be non basketball reasons for transferring but this surprises me——doing this before the new coach is named is puzzling. Are the incoming freshmen so outstanding that he figures he’ll lose minutes? Was he exploring a transfer before Carm left and is now announcing ?

I exchanged text messages with Caleb a couple of weeks ago. He contacted me as part of the hockey team fundraiser. Seems odd that an athlete planning to leave a school would be pitching in to raise $$$ for another sport.....

Another possibility is that he may possibly want to transfer, depending on who the new coach is, and wants to quickly explore his options while he waits. It is July 1st - which is very late to start looking at transfer options - and if he waits another week or more until a new coach is named, that gives him even less chance to look around. At this point, he can talk to other schools, line up his options, and then make a decision once the new coach is on board. Just a possibility.
Bucknell had both John Azzinaro and DJ MacLeay effectively enter the transfer portal a few years ago. But after Coach Paulsen left for GMU, they both changed their decision and stayed.

Too bad if true...mitigated somewhat by the kids coming in from Michigan.
If he's transferring strictly on basketball reasons, seems like a really poor, not well thought out reason. Kid is a nice player, but we won't be watching him in the increasingly unwatchable NBA down the road.I just don't see him in a bettah position at another school with regards to his future endeavors but of course I'm biased.

This makes sense to me. I think I recall the transfer portal being explained on this board to mean that a player entering it gives his current college the right to release themselves from his athletic scholarship, but in Caleb's case that should not be a concern because he is one of the best players so he should be able to use the portal to openly talk with other colleges without risking too much.

Does anyone know how many names are still in the transfer portal and have not found a home - it does seem very late for Caleb to make this move and wondering if there’s others still in there

Just speculating about his desire to transfer out of HC. It could be due to many reasons. My guess is that he signed to play for Coach Carmody in particular. Possibly, he is concerned that he would have difficulty fitting in to other schemes and felt that he would be throwing away his college b-ball career by having to go through the growing pains of learning a new offense/defense, and he did not want to do it. Maybe, he was disappointed with the lack of success of the team and did not want to go through more years of losing with a new coach trying to implement a different offense/defense. Maybe, he did not care for other aspects of HC and with Coach Carmody gone, why stay. Obviously, we'll see how this works out for the young man. I hope that he does get his wish. Whatever happens, I wish him well with much success and happiness in his life. LoveHC ….but he'd have to learn a new scheme at whatever school he goes to, right? Let's all agree=he's testing the waters in the event we hire a psychopath as our new coach.

Just for one close-to-home example, Boston U's transfers (Tyler Scanlan, Jordan Guest, and Kyle Foreman - who didn't play the last two years) are apparently still free agents. Scanlan and Guest will have plenty of D1 opportunities, assuming Guest's suspension the last part of the year doesn't tarnish him too much. And Foreman certainly will be able to find D2/D3 opportunities.

Average player on a last place PL team wants to transfer after a coach with 17 straight conference seasons without a winning record leaves. This program is sorely in need of a new head coach to come in like Willard followed Raynor and put the players through a Division 1 basketball boot camp. Total reboot with those who are still on board.

Coach Carmody's official announcement was two weeks ago today. Reasonable to assume that the team knew before the official announcement.
The timing seems a little strange if we assume this is just due diligence keeping his options open
I am specualting:
1) He put a lot of thought into this decision before going forward - like two weeks of thought 2) He's been in the portal for a while and no one noticed until now or 3) The circumstances have changed. Something that we don't know about just happened and prompted this decision to test the waters

I will speculate too.
It seems there have been several instances recently of PL basketball players transferring "up" to higher profile programs (some for graduate school, some while still in undergrad status). The players involved may feel that they have shown they can play in the PL and are looking for the challenge of playing at a higher level. (The downside for undergrads, it seems to me, is that they may end up with a degree that would be less valued than one from Holy Cross -- or another PL school.)
This may be the motivation here -- but, as I said, just speculation.

i like caleb and i really hope he stays at hc, but the high/mid-major market for sub-6' point guards is limited. while caleb is a far better player/leader than anthony thompson, his transfer prospects remind me of the talk that thompson was going to transfer when fcmb was fired. where? certainly lateral possibilities for caleb as he has good numbers and is a natural leader, but it's hard to see him transferring up... as much as i like him. he's a great fit for our program and i hope he says.

I wish for the best for all good young men, including Mr. Green here.
With that said... was Coach Carmody really the reason that players came to HC? More than the education, the scholarship, the atmosphere, the people, the history, the view, really anything else? This wasn't exactly like following Coach K or Tom Izzo wherever they would go.

Even if it's painful that he's a guy who HC70 liked.

Another:
4. Even though the portal (as I understand it) is supposed to eliminate this sort of thing, he got contacted through back-channels about some opportunities that might be available to him, and they seemed compelling enough to enter the portal.
Regardless, hopefully we have a coach soon and Caleb is quickly back in the fold here.
