We should play Duke and UVA in a home and home series to get attendance up. Maybe charter a plane for Gonzaga to play us @ the Hart. Know what I'm saying. . .

Maybe there's something to the excitement of following national contenders. You can do that in HE but realistically not in the PL. But, BU hockey has the Beanpot and BU basketball has the Turnpike Trophy. That's a wash, right?🤔 Im a broken record but I always found the Beanpawt ovah-rated from a pure sports fan perspective. More of a huge party with college hockey as a back drop. If youre BU, which of the following games would you rather win against BC or Northeastern? 1) Regular season Hockey East games that have playoff home ice implications 2) Hockey East tournament games 3) A potential NCAA matchup 4) Bean Pot games that count zilch toward HE standing [b Since you put it that way, the Turnpike Trophy BB games are more important than the Beanpaht hockey games because they count in the league standings, and even PLT HC-BU matchups would count toward the Trophy. Unfortunately the Boston Globe, Herald and TV stations have not got that memo, but we know.

UMass, a school with an undergraduate enrollment of near 24k, has not drawn well for men's basketball for most of the past decade. Their numbers in the 9,493 seat on campus Mullins Center have been: UMASS HOME ATTENDANCE BY AVERAGE SEASON | GAMES | TOTAL | AVERAGE 2009-10 | 14 | 55,823 | 3,987 2010-11 | 17 | 56,096 | 3,300 2011-12 | 16 | 68,471 | 4,279 2012-13 | 14 | 73,564 | 5,255 2013-14 | 13 | 85,069 | 6,544 2014-15 | 15 | 68,291 | 4,553 2015-16 | 16 | 53,841 | 3,365 2016-17 | 18 | 59,338 | 3,297 2017-18 | 17 | 50,901 | 2,994 2018-19 | 17 | 47,468 | 2,792 TOTAL | 157 | 618,862 | 3,942 Our whole student body could fit in the Hart, UMass can only fit 40% or so of theirs. Time to start winning and draw the students again.

(Tom Poti) The Beanpot means a lot. One of the biggest college hockey tournaments of the year. The final is also electric to watch in person. Go BU 30 time Beanpot Champs. Congratulations to your Uncle. As someone who started reading the Boston Globe Sports at age 5 and learned long division by calculating Ted Williams batting average after each game from the boxscore before it was updated in the next day's paper (and before it was taught to me in school) and now shares a family online subscription I know the Beanpot is the real deal. I also know the Turnpike Trophy, so far, is Pine's Folly. When someone is Beanpot MVP that is a distinction for a lifetime. Congratulations again. In it's day, the annual O'Melia award could rival it. Was that award given at the recent HC-BC football game? I can't recall.

Interesting to note that UMass drew far more fans to its men's hockey games than its men's basketball games: UMass Men's Basketball 17 | 47,468 | 2,792 Men's Hockey 18 | 87,776 | 4,876 The hockey team was excellent and national runner up. The hoops team has blown for the last 6 yrs. What's so interesting about this?

Just confirms that UMass doesn't really have a very large loyal core. Will only attract fans when it is a nationally top ranked team such as hockey last season or the last few hoops seasons under Calipari. Otherwise, even with one of the largest enrollments (23,500+ undergraduate enrollment) in New England with nearly all living on or close to campus, few will come out unless it is a special team and season.

Nice of BC (not) to put in a "Scouting HC" segment in this interminable self praise press release.

" A huge party with college hockey as a backdrop." Throw a huge party with all its implications and students will show up DESPITE the sporting event. I remember the Eastern Sprints, on the local lake, drawing huge crowds to hang out, socialize and party. The beer was flowing, liquid gold. I went with friends and the races were fun to watch for a while but the parties were better. Heck, I can't even remember the name of the long and beautiful puddle in Worcester that hosted the races. The crew guys /women were and are great and to be admired for their incredible dedication and work effort. But, to some students, a party is a party never to be missed. Obviously, many posters may disagree but I'm merely expressing my own personal, fuzzy memory of the event. LoveHC Actually MM, you are not that far off. The Native American meaning of Lake Quinsigamond is The Pickerel or "long nose" fishing spot. However, tribal poets may well have called it "the long and beautiful puddle."

Worth noting that New England's only P5 member Boston College was fourth yet again in average attendance with just 5,243 per game. This despite being located in the region's largest city and having the most attractive schedule of opponents (10 of the 18 were Minnesota, Providence, Virginia, Florida State, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Miami, Louisville, UNC, NC State).

Actually, more a matter of hockey being much more popular in New England than basketball, college and pro alike. From the late 1950s through the mid 1960s, the Bruins were godawful but handily outdrew the Celtics who were racking up one championship after another.

The Midwest and most of the far west support major college sports. the East is another matter. Good point! And I don't expect to see the pro stranglehold dissipate in my lifetime. Anyone under the age of 30 around here pretty much expects to see a parade every year.

Providence and Wisstah have been more 'hoop towns' historically than Boston. Eastern Mass. has been more hockey-centric (ovah basketball) really, since almost forevah.
Southern NE (Conn, RI, parts of SE Mass) has been a much stongah base for college hoop than hockey. Still that way today. Wisstah stopped being a 'college hoops town" when HC decided not to join the BE.

Getting back to the rankings- I think UNH and Sacred Heart deserve the honesty award showing averages under 500 - agree here with the poster that suggested we play in front of such crowds on occasion

Just like HC is hardly the only school that has had kids transfer out, they are FAR from the only school that sometimes over reports the actual attendance. I'll bet the BC actual numbers are even lower than the embarrassing numbers for a P5 school.
