"hired" and "intern" is he a paid intern and what's the difference between a paid intern and an entry level employee? Apparently intern is a flexible term these days and it gets a little confusing. I don't expect you to be the Shell Answer Man. I'll read the press release also.

The press release indicates to me he will be a paid employee doing paid work but the intern angle is the position will last for a specific time period of one academic year. The mentoring he receives will probably be the same as any other first year employee right out of college. Perhaps he is in a grad program and getting academic credit, also, but that would probably be mentioned if it were the case.
IMO, it's a great opportunity to start in a fun and rewarding field.
