One of the Worcester city councilors has requested that the city manager reach out to the Boston Celtics, who recently acquired ownership of their g-league team, to discuss the possibility of moving the g-league team from Portland to Worcester.
The Centrum would be a very busy building in the winter if it housed the ECHL Railers, g league Red Claws, and the Hockey East Crusaders. Probably too busy to be practical
Maybe this lone city councilor is just doing due diligence, or thinks the Red Claws would be a better tenant than HC. However, my read on this is that at least one city councilor thinks Hockey East is not happening. For what it's worth, it was a city official (not this councilor) who told me the Railers veto right on other ice programs was for only 3 years and that HC as a member of Hockey East was not a dead deal as a potential tenant.

If he had another venue to propose this might make sense....the Maine Red Claws play in a place called the Portland Exposition Center (capacity 3K, less than the Hart Center) instead of the Portland Civic Center (or whatever it's called these days).
From a business sense a 14K arena for a G league team is at least twice as large as the attendance standards league-wide. Would be a lose-lose.

And the city in recognition of the good will of HC helping out the city would let the newest entry into Hockey East play at the Centrum for free

I grew up going to “The Expo” which was the venue for Hs basketball, HS track, pro wrestling, concerts, etc. I just checked: it was built in 1915. You have to figure its rental costs are a fraction of what the DCU would be.

I went to a G-League game in Greenville, SC (I think they were playing Asheville) and it was a ghost town but this was like 2002 so a long time ago. Many of the G-League teams are playing in third tier buildings now that aren’t even suitable for AHL hockey

The Worcester team in the predecessor of the G League (CBA?), the Bay State Bombardiers, played in the Auditorium (it was the mid 80s and decrepit then) and never threatened to fill it.
And they had some good players, Michael Adams from BC perhaps most notable.

I bet the Red Claws will come to Worcester if the city and state gift them $100M for a new home to play in.

The city councilor must want Worcester to be the Mecca of minor league sports and lord it over his colleagues from Providence and Portland at the annual New England City Councilor and Selectman Convention.

Also makes it likely that Worcester City councilors will sit by themselves at these events as they will have few friends.
