Apparently, Santi Aldama, Loyola's 6-11 wunderkind, will be ready to play in a few weeks, but not now. They have two other good freshmen in Cam Spencer and Golden Dike (pronounced "D-K"), who have each won an RoW award.
As conference play begins, Andrew Kostecka has emerged as the front-runner for PoY.

Kostecka and Dike played pretty well in their loss to VCU yesterday, at least in the first half.

Announcers for the Loyola-VCU game said he would be back "in a few weeks." Fwiw, which may not be much.

If the coach has been holding him out to give him time to heal more fully, that could cause some resentment on the part of a young player who wants to be out there contributing. (As an aside, I once held out a runner at the end of the season for a fractured bone in his foot). He felt he could compete, but if that bone shifted it could have been VERY serious. The following year, he won the County Meet of Champions with a bone fracture in his other foot - but did not tell me so he could run. Looking back, I would still have held him out.)

I would think if Lowder was held out for health concerns Nelson would have said that, if he's hurt and not ready to play why suit up at all. In any event hopefully he's back because it's obvious Nelson has no confidence in the other point guard options.

Why would he have said that? ...to make it clear for opponents what the situation is? Why would he want to do that?

Why would he have said that? ...to make it clear for opponents what the situation is? Why would he want to do that? One reason would be to avoid all the speculation (and more) that he is being punished for disciplinary issues. If that is not the case, a lot of coaches would say so.

I can see Nelson not volunteering any information one way or the other but pretty sure if Lutsk or another press/reporter asked him point blank the cause for not playing, if it was due to an injury, he could easily have said he "was hurt and unavailable to play" and that's that. Saying it was a "coach's decision" as reported here (I did not personally hear that), that at minimum feeds speculation among fans and doesn't help anyone look good. If the speculation the MIA status was due to disciplinary issues or not an injury, pretty much all that's left is the coach doesn't think the player is currently performing in the top 7-8 players on the team. Considering he was the top scorer, that doesn't make a lot of sense.
I can't say I ever recall a coach saying someone wasn't playing due to the "coach's decision."

1) Anytime a player in any sport at any level is able to play, but doesn't, it's a "DNP CD".
2) For multiple reasons don't count on getting too much info in tomorrow nite's pre-game show on WEEI regarding Lowder.

Jimy Williams used to say "manager's decision" all the time.
