WPI earns an at large bid to the NCAA D3 Tournament. It will mark WPI's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2016 but its 11th in the last 17 seasons under 19-year head coach Chris Bartley. The Engineers are 20-7 this season and were receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25. The Crimson and Gray will be participating in their 13th NCAA Tournament in program history, with other appearances occurring in 1982 and 1985.Men's Basketball to Tangle with Yeshiva in NCAA Tournament at Johns Hopkins Regional athletics.wpi.edu/sports/mbkb/2019-20/releases/20200302m0ull9

11 NCAAs in 17 seasons? Sounds similar to Chesney and located a couple of miles closer to HC at WPI than Chesney was at Assumption.
The Nationwide Search Firm probably figured Coach Bartley could only recruit Engineering Geeks and thus couldn't recruit liberal arts student athletes to HC.

I've stated my belief many times: recruiting is selling--If you are persuasive and can sell product A your are likely able to be persuasive when selling product B. Coach Chesney's performance to date supports that theory. Coach Barltey may be similar. I know of the example of the Williams coach who failed at D-1--but I'd bet many many more have succeeded than have failed

First I have heard of this actually happening and am alarmed. The economy doesn't function well without people moving about.

this is not a political statement but to put things into perspective, the (normal) flu has taken approx 40000 lives this season - that is in line with the historical figure. If you figure the flu season is about 6 months, that's more than 200 deaths per day. (I know the covid-19 is more serious but these stats are illuminating)

The PL would take the ticket sale hit I believe, but HC owns the keys to the building so they can make their own call if they choose.

covid-19 is different from the flu (death rate is half that of the flu and it seems less dangerous for children than the flu), but the biggest difference between the two is the role of the media in amplifying panic. In our local paper yesterday, there were over 2 dozen articles about the virus (with special attention to the details of every diagnosis and a large article for every death). Imagine the impact if the same coverage were ever given to influenza today.

ESPN article. 3 WPI players didn't play; question is, were they players or jags? (Edit: One starter and one bench player who played a lot. A soph and a junior, wonder how this is going over with the guys they have to play with next year).
BALTIMORE -- In what was believed to be the first U.S. sports event held without fans because of the new coronavirus, Yeshiva University beat Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a Division III men's basketball NCAA Tournament game Friday at an empty gym at Johns Hopkins University.
The scene included players on each team's bench cheering and chanting "De-fense!" to make up for the lack of fans. Only players, referees, employees and media members were present in the 1,100-seat Goldfarb Gymnasium, so the official attendance was 0.
"It was definitely different, but our guys on the bench really made up for it," Yeshiva coach Elliott Steinmetz said after the 102-78 win. "The energy on the bench was absolutely awesome, and I think it really carried the guys on the court in a big way."
As students walked by the athletics facility, there were police officers outside and signs on doors reading, "No spectators." Music blared over the speakers inside and some pre-planned fan announcements, including one promoting social media sharing -- "Tell the world you're here" -- went on with no fans to hear them.
"It was definitely a weird experience," WPI forward Jake Wisniewski said. "Everything, all the emotions that are going on the court, everyone was able to hear it, which was weird. Usually, the crowd can kind of mask a lot of things that are being said on the court."
An NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel said Friday that it is "not recommending cancellation or public spacing of athletic and related events scheduled to occur in public spaces across the United States." Johns Hopkins senior scholar Amesh Adalja is on the panel.
Johns Hopkins University said it was "prudent to hold this tournament without spectators" after Maryland's recently confirmed COVID-19 cases and CDC guidelines for large gatherings. Maryland announced there were three cases of the virus.
Also, a student at Yeshiva, an Orthodox Jewish university in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, tested positive for the virus.
The game was delayed by more than an hour after a Yeshiva rabbi tested positive and the school needed to provide documentation to ensure it was safe to play. WPI waited at its hotel while that was completed.
Once things got underway, the national anthem and announcements of starting lineups went on as normal, with players giving each other fist pounds instead of handshakes. WPI was without three players who decided not to play because of fears about the virus.
"Once we got the OK from Johns Hopkins University and the NCAA that they felt comfortable, we had most of our team and student-athletes and parents comfortable about playing. We didn't have everybody, though," WPI coach Chris Bartley said. "We left it up to the individual student and their parents to make that decision and we tried to provide as much information as possible. The difficulty in this situation is there was not much information for us to disseminate to our parents and students."
Yeshiva posted its 28th consecutive victory and first in the NCAA Tournament in program history.
"At the end of the day, we said we're just going to play our game and play basketball and run our stuff and play defense," said sophomore Ryan Turell, who scored a career-high 41 points in the empty arena.
Host Johns Hopkins was set to face Penn State Harrisburg on Friday night, with the winner playing Yeshiva in the second round Saturday night.
The gym was heavily disinfected Thursday night and then again between games Friday.
"We did that specific to make sure that there were no questions that we were doing our due diligence, that everything was clean and ready to go," Johns Hopkins director of athletic communications Ernie Larossa said. "We're just doing our due diligence to make sure that everybody has a safe environment to compete in."
Johns Hopkins offered refunds to fans who bought tickets. Larossa said that more than 400 tickets had been sold for the two games Friday.
The Maccabees, named after the rebel Jewish warriors, are used to legions of faithful fans who sing in Hebrew, chant out their names from the stands and often follow them on the road. Players on the bench, some wearing Jewish skullcaps, instead chanted "Let's go, Macs!" while their parents watched back at the hotel amid some fears the team wouldn't get back to the hotel by sundown.
"Our bench (players), they did a concerted effort to really be loud and energetic and try to fill it with as much noise as possible," Yesheva's Simcha Halpert said.
