Is this the first step toward the cancellation of the NCAA tourney?

They should have played, but with no spectators

If you play in front of no spectators, you can still televise and collect all that TV money
If you cancel, you have to give back all kinds of money. That might open a huge negotiation. TV has a contract for college hoops which includes the tournament. However, I'm sure CBS thinks the 67 tournament games are worth more than 67 random games. Either way, a big chuck of change to walk away from.
Yes, I am being cynical and thinking money trumps public safety

Is this the first step toward the cancellation of the NCAA tourney? Nope, at least not yet. Per Mark Emmert “NCAA member schools and conferences make their own decisions regarding regular season and conference tournament play. As we have stated, we will make decisions on our events based on the best, most current public health guidance available. Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly.”

Just like the days of yesteryear, we'll be hearing "but we didn't have spring practice" before the season opener vs Yale.

Currently watching an AE playoff game (Stony Brook v Hartford) online. Here is what SBU (host) did:
Ticket sales will be monitored to ensure fans will have the opportunity to maintain a safe distance from one another should they so desire. Additionally, ticket sales will be discontinued at noon on game day and no tickets will be sold at the door. As the coronavirus situation evolves, the health and safety of our students, guests and staff members is paramount. It is important for guests to feel safe and have an enjoyable experience. As such, we are implementing additional precautions: • Additional cleaning staff at the venue and frequent handwashing by servers • Hand sanitizer will be available for guests • A "no handshake" policy for the evening will be encouraged • Increasing the rigor of cleaning and sanitizing procedures

Seems like smart measures by Stony Brook.
We are able to continue to live our lives rather than staying cooped up in our bunkers watching the news.

FWIW Yale is on Spring Break this week and just told kids to stay away another two weeks (instead of returning) during which time classes will be held online. And then the situation will be reassessed.

CIAC cancels all winter state tourneys for CT high schools. SAD!! What an awful decision. We are living in an ultra-alarmist society.

Is this the first step toward the cancellation of the NCAA tourney? Nope its just the Ivy League trying to show the rest of the world how "woke" they are. Seriously how hard is it to just say, "we're playing the games at Dartmouth. Attendance will be limited to select media and however many will call tickets each student-athlete and coach is typically allocated. Concessions will not be served -- vending machines are located at X. Game will be broadcast on radio network Y and TV network Z. Make sure to tune into the action while quarantined in your own dorm room or apartment."

You can always tell an Ivy League man you just can’t tell him much.
