A very exciting day to be at HC, esp in Kimball where Lewie received a standing O.
We all knew the odds were very, very long, but there was that slight glimmer of hope, and fame.

At least one student, a year behind you, did not stand in Kimball. Wasn't me, I was in high school. T'was my brother who said he was disgusted by the display for some "punk high school kid."   . My memory of 55 years ago was that he felt the way he did because he "knew" Big Lew was never coming to Holy Cross and that the standing O was like begging him to come to a college that he should have understood was a great school. |

Thanks for that reminder. I was in Kimball that night, too. He came into the dining hall with Texeira, The students (including me) went wild. I've always thought that that reception killed whatever miniscule chance there was that he might come to HC. Much too big a fish for much too small a pond. |

The word diversity was decades away from having a political context in 1965, but I bet the concept didn't escape Lew as he looked over the sea of faces in Kimball.

I saw an interesting tidbit in the Crusader Sports Section. When Jack Donahue was hired in 1965, scholarships for basketball were increased to seven. |

Bidwell/Knittel 7-0 each; spring training in March was a 'southern trip' to Amherst in a snowstorm to use their indoor battling gage. That was a formidable Prefect intramural bball team; John Mee & Jay Dugan at forward; starting OT's on the fball team. |

In '65 HC finished 17-5. It was the next to last season for Coach Hop Riopel (a legendary Crusader). The next year - his last in coaching - the team was 11-7.

His freshman year was the last time he was gangly or a bit awkward.
His sophomore season he was incredibly dominant.

KyCrusader 75 Edgar Lacy and Sam Lacey were two different people. Edgar was from the LA area and a Parade Magazine All American who graduated from HS in ‘63 and went to UCLA. He started as a soph on UCLA’s second national championship in the Wooden era. Then he kinda faded out of the picture when Alcindor, Allen, Shackelford, Warren & Heitz came on the scene.
Sam Lacey was younger I think...part of the 1970 class—one of the best hoops classes of all time-Bob Lanier, Dan Issel, Pistol Pete, Calvin Murphy, Rick Mount, Tiny Archibald, Geoff Petrie, Rudy Tomjanovich et al.

Edgar Lacey was a star at UCLA. Sadly, both men are no longer with us. Edgar's last name was a bit of an oddity. "In public printed media, his last name was generally rendered as Lacey. However, at the time he signed his professional contract, he indicated the correct spelling had always been Lacy" |

Thanks for the corrections. I thought it was Edgar --but call me Sam--Lacey. You won't believe this but I was conflating Edgar Lacey and Sam Lacey with a real Edgar who went by "Sam": the great Washington Senators outfielder Edgar "Sam" Rice, HOFer.

Mike(later Michael of Hill Street Blues) Warren and Lucius Allen was one of, if not the best college backcourts I have ever seen which is why I think the best UCLA team was Alcindor’s soph year, 1966-67 |
