The sport has changed a lot offensively since Flute played his last collegiate regular season game on the frozen tundra at Fitton Field.

And then was flown by helicopter from the Worcester airport to the Heisman ceremony. My young son was among the many who joined the caravan to the airport from the game.

Did Doug Flutie graduate as #1 all time passing leader at the time?

87, are you channeling John Facenda, with your āFrozen Tundraā comment? š.
I grew up seeing John Facenda reading the evening news. John Jones, a friend when I was in grammar school, and later in high school, became a protege and was a student of John Facenda. He became a TV news reporter after college. Unfortunately he passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 41.
The BC game played at Fitton, in 1986, was definitely played on Frozen Tundra after the snow fall on the previous Thursday.

And then was flown by helicopter from the Worcester airport to the Heisman ceremony. My young son was among the many who joined the caravan to the airport from the game. Three friends and I had been sitting in the upper end zone and my car was on the baseball field. At gameās end we decided to take a āshort cutā to it via the field. Found ourselves among nearly a thousand folks crowding around Flutieās post game interview and then getting involuntarily shoved to the visitor sideline as police escorted him to a cruiser near center field for transport to the waiting helicopter at the airport. He somehow made it to the Downtown AC on time to collect the Trophy š

And then was flown by helicopter from the Worcester airport to the Heisman ceremony. My young son was among the many who joined the caravan to the airport from the game. I've always believed the helicopter story and in my mind's eye I have this vague picture from the TV broadcast of a helicopter in the outfield of the baseball field - which of course makes no sense if there was tailgating of any kind on the field that day. So I went to see if there was video of the game anywhere and found this recap of the BC 1984 season - narrated by, I think, Jack Bicknell. Advance to the 29:00 minute mark of the video and there's an interview with Troy Stradford prior to the HC game, then some highlights of the game and you'll see how Flutie gets to Worcester airport and then to NYC. Perhaps the helicopter got him from LaGuardia to Manhattan and the New York Hilton for the ceremony?

Thanks for posting 8485....great to see the old, wooden Fitton filled one last time in that video.
Again, it was only 17-10 at the half...valiant effort by our guys against a Top 5 team in the entire country that year.

I was there and it seems like yesterday. Looking back, those '83 and '84 teams HC fielded were loaded with talent...unfortunately BC was national-caliber those years, outmanned us at just about every position, and were led by one of the top quarterbacks in college history.

Flutie was in the same position as he was in Miami a week earlier. One play left (in the half) at the 50 yard line. The crowd buzzed with anticipation.
HC didn't lay back and let him throw another "jump ball" into the end zone. They blitzed and sacked him. One of the best plays in HC history in my opinion.

It was freezing that day. I can still see WBZ TV and Radio personality Dave Maynard in a full length Raccoon coat walking on the path behind the outfield waving and everybody yelling his trademark saying to him: "Piece of Cake, Dave!" That game was an event.

I was there with 5 buddies from WMass, HC played great, especially in the first half. Fitton was packed to the rafters. Dinner at the Wonder Bar after the game.

I donāt recall the day being that cold and I thought the sack by Dooley happened with BC on about the 25 or so. Also, wasnāt there a mini dust up at mid field following the coin toss? So the helicopter bit was a myth? That BC film shows a private plane taking off from Worcester. Lastly, 22,500 for the attendance has to be off. There were at least 2-3,000 standing behind the chain link fence that encircled the field in front of the grandstands and in the open end zone.

/\ I don't remember it freezing either in '84 funny enough (of course there could be several explanations for that LOL). I do remember BC scored like 4TDs quickly QTR 3 and then called off the dogs. Steve Raquet posted the '83 BC game in 4 segments (might be old news, I just stumbled into it: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjKTUU2NxW2-hJdpy3IaTB04s5gMFt3xQ ) That '83 blowout was really a disappointment (more so than '84 IMHO) and a reality check as it was clear we were loaded. (In '84 it was evident we were good for I-AA but BC was a I-A juggernaut and Flutie was the best.)

Helicopter mystery explained. Two private planes flew from Worcester Airport to New York carrying Doug and his entourage including BC officials, his high school coach, his girlfriend (now wife) and Gerard Phelan. Then Doug was transported by helicopter to the Downtown Athletic Club for the ceremony.

Pride-
You have to remember that Fenerty, Cowly and Porter were missing due to injuries....that hurt us big time.

Pride- You have to remember that Fenerty, Cowly and Porter were missing due to injuries....that hurt us big time. I know ...but it was SO one sided in ā83 ...we threw six interceptions... almost no offense to speak of ... and we simply couldnāt stop their offense in the 47-7 loss. Nothing to be ashamed of, they were just bigger, faster and stronger than one of our best (ever) HC teams... heck, BC beat Alabama the following game to move to a 15th ranking and finished the season 19th in the country.

If that was the game at Alumni Stadium televised on ABC, I remember one Crusader Fan holding a sign for the network cameras: (A)in't We (B)owl (C)ontenders, too? Perhaps it was the '81 game, but there was still some confusion then about the parameters of the new 1-AA sub-division.

Those games kinda proved that continuing to play BC annually was a bad idea.
Too bad that the program we had was systematically dismantled.

Think about the talent on that ā83 team. Any team with big contributors like Kozerski, Raquet, Fenerty, Porter, Harry Flaherty, Tim Galloway, Bill McGovern, and Muldoon, etc. has got to be considered one of our best. 3 of those guys were drafted by the NFL (Kozerski, Raquet, Fenerty), 2 more made NFL rosters and played in at least one NFL game (Porter, Flaherty), 1 more drafted by the USFL (Galloway) , McGovern is Ring of Honor, and Muldoon was a terrific QB. [FWIW 4 of the major contributors I listed are now members of our Football Ring of Honor] It is true they did not play Syracuse and Penn State. Their two losses were to Boston College and Western Carolina..and a tie with Harvard. Note: Edited to add Tim Galloway (transfer from Ohio State) who I somehow overlooked while remembering the talent on the talent rich 9-2-1 '83 squad.
