The late John Thompson has an opinion piece in the NY Times. There is a paywall that I cannot copy here but here is the link: www.nytimes.com/2020/11/12/opinion/ncaa-sports-paying-college-players.htmlI am sure Fr. Brooks is rolling over in his grave. FWIW, I have previously posted that I also believe student-athletes should be paid but one big difference, they get $0 room, board, tuition, books, etc. They must pay that out of their salaries. Problem is, of course, a school like Holy Cross would have athlete "salaries" much higher to cover those expenses.

Yeah, if they and Dean Smith could all come back to Earth for a conversation on the NCAA it would be must-see TV. As an alumnus of 2013, I never had the chance to listen to him or interact with him. However, based on what I have read and heard of him, I would imagine he would say something along the lines of "Yeah, this has been going on for awhile, and it has only gotten worse. This is exactly why we did not join the Big East. As I told you both decades ago, what you guys and your successors are doing has little to do with education." On an interesting tangent, Fr. K's history of HC traces the tension between competing in elite, national varsity athletics and the school's academic mission to the early 20th century. This is certainly not an ephemeral debate.

The athletes in the "Power 5" are already professionals in all but name. I find it amazing that a full scholarship of tuition, room and board Is so easily ignored by some who want pay IN ADDITION to that valuable prize (given to every scholarship athlete at HC). sader70's humor has a good deal of truth behind it. Don't forget, any pay to play would also be taxable...altopugh the Power 5 could probably find a way to avoid that for their pro athletes.

You want all athletes to be paid ? Nah, some wouldn't be worth it! Look at all those losers we got rid of from last year's basketball team (I'm being sarcastic in case you don't know). More seriously, I meant those who are currently on scholarships and more specifically the "revenue sports" but this really was just a starting discussion point.Same amount for all ? The minimum for revenue sports would be enough to cover room, board, etc. IF they actually matriculate. Since in reality paid student-athletes are professional minor leagues, some at many schools would not matriculate and would be paid whatever the market would bear for their services.
Every sport ? See response to first questionOh, and if the athlete refuses to wear a uniform with an actual Crusader logo on it, they can go play elsewhere. Those who reject the Crusader mascot/logo - students, faculty, administrators can also go elsewhere where they won't be offended.
And if you still don't "get it," I'm just trying to stir things up as Crossports has been too staid lately.

Cost of attendance stipends vary from $2,500 to $4,000 from what I can gather. I'm assuming those payments are in addition to the players' cars
