TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2020
Twas the Night Before Christmas, in this year 2020,
a most challenging year, to understate plenty.
The demon called Covid had thrown the world for a loop,
made it rather trivial to be thinking of hoop.
And it was no different atop Mt St. James,
With everyone living their lives day to day.
But Coach Nelson was determined to fight through this gloom,
for he knew their fans wanted wins; and wanted them soon.
So he scheduled a practice the day before Christmas,
With hopes they’d make progress by getting down to business.
But alas, nary a player came through the gym doors;
I swear Coach’s eyes burned a hole in the floor.
So he summoned his assistants- Joe, Sam and RJ;
to get their thoughts on this now stressful day
First they searched the whole campus, from bottom to top;
they searched every building till Coach told them to stop.
Coach RJ said “ I have some ideas of where they may be;
hey Joe, hey Sam, you guys follow me!”
With that they jumped into their cars and sped off,
leaving Coach Nelson alone before he could tell them to stop.
So he went back to his office and lay down for a nap,
to catch a few winks before his guys came back.
After what seemed like minutes but was actually hours,
the coaches stormed in; faces anything but dour.
One said “ they skipped practice, but they had their reasons,
There were things to be done for this holiday season’.
What we heard and witnessed to some might not ring true,
but it will certainly come as no surprise to you!”
“For families in need AB brought groceries from Big Y,
as the folks received them some started to cry.
Matt Faw certainly needed no special invitation,
to volunteer to drive people to Covid testing stations.
Ryan thought he could assist those on the front lines
by tutoring their children, a great use of his time.
With that part covered, Joey took it upon himself
to bring the front liners coffee, while dressed as an elf.
Bubba and Bo set up shop at the local soup kitchen,
serving up hot meals with holiday fixins”.
Randy and Mike Rabs were assigned another task;
they went door to door dropping off Crusader masks.
Malcolm and Judson also volunteered with glee;
for the disabled they decorated their Christmas trees.
Gerrale teamed with DJ to spread Christmas joy,
dropping off wrapped toys for needy girls and boys.
Louth’s still in Canada; but he can carry a tune,
he sang Christmas carols to nursing home residents via Zoom”!
The assistants’ report ended, with nothing more to say,
the team had been giving The Full Nelson way.
And just like that the players started to appear;
headed quickly to the locker room to don practice gear.
They bolted out to the floor, and broke right into drills;
The Full Nelson package, to sharpen their skills.
The coaches were all shocked when they watched Ryan Wade,
shooting locked arm jumpers, with each one made!
Gates set a personal goal of which only the coaches knew,
On this practice shirt he had scrawled “51/42”.
Now perhaps there were no stars to anoint;
but each act of hustle drew shouts of “Tommy Point”!
The drills continued for quite a long time;
their unbridled enthusiasm had Coach feeling so fine.
“We may take our lumps early, but we’ll be just fine;
with Men for Others like these it’s just a matter of time.”
So he ended this practice; the players showered and dressed,
another step taken on their quest to be best.
They looked forward to meeting up with those Boston Terriers;
to bring them down would make the new year much merrier.
And soon they filed out of the Hart, and into the cold night,
shouting “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
