After a starter testing positive on Thursday, Purdue still played Michigan on Friday(and lost) Controversy abounds.

Some people use "cancelled" and "postponed" interchangeably. Newscasters and sports writers do this far too frequently. In this case, I believe you are correct that they have been postponed. Of course, during this pandemic, vocabulary is probably the least of everyone's concerns. Believe me I loathe the keyboard nitpickers -- especially the spelling/typo superstars and those literalists forever in search of exceptions to rules -- more than anyone, but cancelled and postponed are quite different. The NFL was justifiably proud that no regular season games were cancelled this season. (Yes, many games were postponed, games were moved, etc. due to Covid protocols).

I think in the short term everybody will just postpone. If somebody has too many postponements and it gets hard to find a date, cancellations could come later.
Just looking at BC - they need to make up two games. They play twice a week, once on the weekend and once mid week. The only exception is an open weekend on Feb 20. Unfortunately, the two postponed opponents play that weekend (one on Sat and one on Sunday). BC's last game is March 5 and the ACC tournament starts the 9th. Not a lot of open time in there. Not the end of the world, but they're going to have to bite the bullet and play 3 games a week. They have 6 weeks to figure this out, which is plenty of time unless one of those make up opponents develops their own issues.
Much easier in the Patriot League with two full weeks between the end of the season and the start of the tournament

Purdue (with one positive case) played last night and play again today. One coach told his players, “You all want to play in the NBA. So here we are.”

How about this ? Because of cost cutting during the pandemic, the Michigan hoops team bussed to Purdue last night instead of flying in their private plane.

Not high major but,
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Patriot League men's and women's basketball games between Bucknell and Colgate scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23 and Sunday, Jan. 24 have been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests with the Bucknell men's and women's basketball programs' Tier 1.

Good timing by Bucknell

A Bucknell manager tested positive. Actually the timing is not so great, since it also has caused next week's two games vs Lehigh to be postponed. Since LU is in the same mini-conference, it will be imperative to get those games played.

How about this ? Because of cost cutting during the pandemic, the Michigan hoops team bussed to Purdue last night instead of flying in their private plane. It's a four hour drive. Basically the equivalent of Holy Cross chartering a flight from Worcester to Elmira to play Colgate.

But the point is that they have always flown previously

After 4 or 5 days wouldn't they know for sure if there was any spread to the Bucknell team(s)? If no cases, perhaps the Lehigh games will be delayed only a couple of days.

Love the “tier 1 personnel” term. Player, coach, manager would seem all included and effectively hides who it might be in anonymity.
If nothing else, covid brings out the creativity in organizations.

Raises the interesting question of how this will be handled by PL football schools. Lots of potential “Tier 1 personnel” in a football program. If one of them has a positive test, does the whole team get shut down for 10 days? If so, going to be very tough to have a season.

Holy Cross is testing all students with access to campus twice a week, and athletes competing in sports, more than twice a week. IMO, that rigorous testing seems likely to minimize spread within the campus community, and the need to shut down a team. IMO, the student athletes will be very responsible with respect to their conduct, because they know what is at stake. AFAIK, no student athlete on the winter sports teams, who have now been on campus for more than three months, and no student athlete who worked out during the fall (though not competing) has tested positive. <<< This, IMO, is a good start, and bodes well.

A more transmissible variant could go right through a team and an opponent in an indoor sport like basketball.

I wonder when we will get to the point where just because a member of the program has COVID, games don’t get canceled.

Back to cancelling vs postponing. In order to avoid cancelling, Michigan is going to need to make up 4 games in 4 weeks. Basically for the rest of the season, their typical week is 3 games, 3 practices, and 1 NCAA mandated day off. They're really hoping they get their next scheduled game in on Feb 11

Check out AP #25 St Louis. Their record is 7-1. It is all OOC games. While some A-10 teams have played as many as NINE league games thus far, SLU has played ZERO due to Covid.
