He was the best. Right up there with Ted Williams, Bill Russell, Rocky Marciano, etc., as an all time New England great. He deserved a title fight long before he got one and I thought he out-fought Leonard in his last fight. Marvelous Marvin fought at the Centrum if I am remembering correctly. His fight against Tommy Hearns is remembered as one of the best of all time.
He was discovered as a dirt poor kid in Brockton by a couple of brothers with a local gym, Pat and Goody Petronelli and Marvin retained them to train him for his whole career. Very loyal like you don't see much anymore.

R.I.P. Marvin. He became good friends with my best friends father-in-law in Jackson, NH. Great stories about a great athlete.

RIP Marvelous....we saw the Leonard fight on closed-circuit at the Centrum while at HC....we were all wicked pissed with the decision that night. Practice if not actual rule, if you want to beat the champion, you have to beat the champion. Leonard had a lot of showmanship that day. In all fairness, Leonard's gloves touched Hagler more often than Hagler punched Leonard. That being said, he never did any damage. Completely ignoring all precedent to give Leonard that decision. Definitely a New England sports legend

It's hard for those who didn't watch him in his prime to understand the impact and popularity Marvelous Marvin Hagler had on the New England Sports scene. Especially since boxing has unfortunately fallen off the map.
He was right up there with Larry Bird, Roger Clemens, Cam Neely as a Boston Sport icon in the 80s. Lots of great memories watch him just beat the snot out of guys.
RIP

Not the icons you mentioned but Hagler having dinner with some big Boston sports names By the way, I would be interested to know how many non-New Englanders recognize all of the other guys. I suspect non-locals might struggle with one. Anyone who can't name at least one of the guys sitting with Hagler should be suspended from this board

It is Bill Rogers. Well known in the Boston sports scene in that era. Not sure how well he is known outside of the area
