Based on what we know today, here’s what next year’s roster could look like. I’ll assume for purposes of this exercise that Dorsey will play 4 years at HC and that Gates will play two more. I’m keeping everyone else on track to graduate as expected without the extra year of eligibility.
Fr Austin Lewis 6’10” Kyrell Luc 5’11” Caleb Kenny 6’5” Nolan Dorsey 6’5”
Soph RJ Johnson 6’1” Bo Montgomery 6’5” Bubba Humphrey 6’4” Mike Rabinovich 6’10” Louth Coulibaly 6’8” Judson Martindale 6’6”
Jr Ryan Wade 6’2” Gerrale Gates 6’6” Joey Reilly 6’0”
Sr Malcolm Townsel 6’5” DJ Hart 6’5”
Hart and someone else (Reilly?) will not be on scholarship at HC next season.

Having 10 of 13 scholarships in consecutive classes is not ideal but injuries and/or defections can change class sizes very quickly as we’ve learned in the past. At least we have three years left for Nelson to sink or swim with his guys. If we’re not competing for championships by RJ’s senior year, the class balance will be someone else’s problem.

Mike R. and Louth will make big jumps this off season...particularly on the defensive end. That will make us very tough.

Agree that their progress is the key to how good we can be.

/\ Not necessarily gospel (none of these sites are), but incoming highschoolers aren’t listed. Beyond that there’s a bit of understandable guesswork necessary regarding year groups and eligibility for other players

It’s possible this is what the roster will look like the year after next as well, sans DJ who will have graduated. We don’t know where Gates and Townsend are in terms of their expected graduation dates.

Re: Joey Reilly--here's the press release from HC stating that Joey "will attend Holy Cross and play for the Crusaders." The wording is the same as was used for Ciaran Sandy. I would bet that Joey Reilly is not on scholarship at HC.
Sandy Announcement
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head men's basketball coach Bill Carmody announced today that Ciaran Sandy will attend Holy Cross and play for the Crusaders. Sandy will be one of four players joining the Holy Cross program in the fall of 2019.
Reilly Announcement
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross head men's basketball coach Brett Nelson announced today that Joey Reilly (Cromwell, Conn.) will attend Holy Cross and play for the Crusaders. Reilly will be one of five players joining the Holy Cross program for the 2019-2020 season.
A 6-foot-0, 170-pound guard, Reilly played at East Catholic High School in Manchester, Conn., for head coach Luke Reilly (his uncle). A two-time Connecticut High School Coaches Association first team all-state selection, he is East Catholic's all-time leading scorer with 1,828 career points. Reilly averaged 20 points and six assists per game as a senior, while earning player of the year honors from the Hartford Courant. He led East Catholic to a pair of state championships in 2019 (Division I) and 2016 (Class L), three Central Connecticut Conference titles and an overall four-year record of 104-7. Reilly also played AAU ball for the Middlesex Magic.
“We are really excited to have Joey join our basketball family here at Holy Cross,” said Nelson. “He is skilled and tough, but most importantly he is winner who makes everyone around him better.”
Holy Cross will be entering its first year under Nelson in 2019-2020. The Crusaders finished the 2018-2019 campaign with an overall record of 16-17.

^True. Townsel could also finish with the current sophs which would give us one empty class, which isn’t ideal.

But when he was recruited, pre Covid, the scholarship and academic plan was for two years. I see that remaining the same. He undoubtedly will not need more than next year to fulfill his graduation requirements. Covid will not change that.

Also, how would any of us know what the plan was when he was recruited unless he or a coach told us?

In a normal transfer situation, Gates would have sat this year and played for two years after that. I think Townsel could have played this past year and had one more year left to play.

Do JuCo's have to sit out? If they have completed their time at the college (normally 2 years) can't they just jump right in at the next school. It's not a transfer but finishing at that school. Not unlike RJ Evans finishing at HC and playing at UConn the next year

I think we have set a record for the longest period without a basketball post and this gratuitous alert does nothing at all to advance the discussion....Any news or new thoughts?
