For anyone about to read this: Think Walt Disney....or Al Michaels at Lake Placid
Merry Christmas Crossporters!
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2021
Twas the Night Before Christmas and on top of the hill,
The Luth complex stood, withstanding a harsh chill.
The building seemed empty, but that was not true,
There was a lone soul in there, feeling very blue.
Coach Nelson sat alone in his cold, dark digs
Wondering if this might be his one head coaching gig.
Weary alums were downtrodden with what had transpired
To a once proud program that seemed ready to expire.
The Full Nelson message just was not getting through,
And now here he was, without a clue what to do.
The league schedule loomed, with no improvement in sight,
No matter where he looked in search of a bright light.
He noticed that no one was taking his calls,
Since the program had spun into a giant free fall.
Now scheduling a home game was as tough as could be,
Even Clark had refused, only offered a pity guarantee.
“Am I going to have to figure this out on my own”, he thought in despair
“Or could there be a solution for me; somehow, somewhere?”
Then suddenly there was forceful pounding on his door,
Startled him so much that he fell to the floor.
He warily got up to see who was there,
At this time of night who could possibly care?
To his surprise it was Coach Chesney, and some others who were up late,
Maybe Sluka and Dobbs, with some of their mates.
Ches said “Coach, you’ve been under such stress,
And I see in your face all kinds of distress.
But I think we can help get your guys back on track,
So take a break for a bit and then come on back.
Coach Nelson was so grateful; Ches gave his spirits a lift
So he headed out to shop for some last minute gifts.
Meanwhile in the Hart rafters I felt a smile on my face,
Cause some real intense drills were now taking place.
Offense and defense, no down time at all,
Such incredible focus; no detail too small.
It seemed something special was unfolding before me
Almost fell from my perch, with my emerging glee. <<<yes I was hiding in the rafters again
This went on for a while, but then suddenly it stopped.
I looked to the corner and then my jaw dropped.
A new group was entering and ran on to the floor.
Seemed unreal to me that there could possibly be more.
I thought to myself “am I going insane?”
No, Ches arranged with State U a short practice game!
It started just as Coach Nelson got back in the gym.
And as he watched his demeanor was anything but grim.
For Gates was a beast in the post, with a Dobbs like fury,
If I had to guard him I’d be wracked with worry.
Bigs Louth, Rabs and Lewis threw down flush after flush,
All with the intensity of a Liam Anderson blitz rush.
RJ and Luc pushed their way up court, with slithering, juking styles,
Getting to the rim with an ease not seen in a long while.
Kenney patrolled the baseline in a 1-3-1,
Anticipating like John Smith as he got the job done.
Once Bubba broke deep in transition, caught a long pass in stride,
And just like Ayeni he scored with purple pride.
Jud, Bo and Dorsey took part with long distance shooting feats
nailing 3 pointers measured in yards, not feet!
For Coach Nelson it felt great to see those shooters come alive,
though he thought it strange they all wore number 35.
Like a Ches special teamer Townsel did all the little things,
Knowing full well all the joy it would bring.
So inspired were DJ and Tomer by the Ches Sensation,
They wrote the Big East for a HC invitation.
I won’t tell you who won, but it a sure gave me a reason,
To think there was still a chance for a good season.
And I’ll leave you with that thought on this Christmas Eve,
It’s all up to you whether you choose to believe.
And like the team yelled as they ran out of sight
Merry Christmas to All, and To All a Good Night!
