Always enjoyed his commentary and presence on TV. He came across with a good sense of humor and was an entertaining, knowledgeable football personality. Rest In Peace, John.

Dick Vitale and John Madden had similar impacts on their sports as broadcasters. RIP big man.

My favorite Madden story comes from the great documentary on the life of Vince Lombardi. In it, Madden tells about being a young coach, apparently very confident in his coaching abilities. I'm guessing this is before he was an NFL head coach. He attends a football coaching conference and goes to a breakout session where Lombardi is going to talk about the Packers Power Sweep play. Paraphrasing, Madden says "I went into the session thinking 'what is this guy going to be able to teach me", and three hours later I came out realizing that I knew nothing about coaching football".

Some time in the 80s I recall one of the local Boston TV stations caught up with him at Harvard Stadium: at a Harvard/Brown game where there was a son on each team. A quick interview saying how proud he was and just enjoying the game with a big cigar in his mouth. The way it should be for parents when their child is playing sports, but often isn't.
Sadly, not too many men (one woman, Lee Meredith, still with us) left from those legendary Miller Lite commercials. Bob Uecker's the only one that comes to mind.

Heinsohn's performance in those commercials overshadows any other ex-Celt that appeared in them.
Sam and Nellie are still around, too. Nellie grows weed (legally) on a farm in Maui. Sounds like a nice life.

Had a similar experience coaching HS football in the 90s. Went to a clinic by Tom Coughlin (NYGiants & BC) where he went over the passing game. It was all Greek to me - I asked a couple long time coaches what they thought; they had no clue either!

Madden knew football (from a number of angles) and was willing and happy to share that knowledge with others. I will miss his contributions to the sport and to broadcasting. May his soul rest in peace.

I'm sure there are a lot of solid plans laid out by lecturing coaches; the only problem is that the plans work just fine if you have the talent to implement them.

Plans are great. Kudos to plans. But... Eveyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth, to paraphrase Mike Tyson.

Sad to see Betty White miss her 100th birthday party. I'll bet it would have been a good one. May her soul rest in peace.
