Agree with NAD and others. Do fun stuff together during the long break when you’re practicing a ton. Just don’t need the tweet under our current circumstances. Tweet about how practice is going and how hard everyone is working to improve.

Duh!!! I just got the thread title. It was the posting author's take that the entire team was a "losing team." Guess my mind put a positive spin on it and thought the losers of an intra-squad game were forced to play a game of dodgeball. Wish I could attribute my denseness to something excusable like covid but, knock on wood, still pandemic-free. Carry on. Maybe I'll take a nap.

Should have called it bombardment instead of dodgeball. Make it sound more manly.

Did anyone notice in reviewing the photo, that Nolan Dorsey was out of the walking boot, and participated in the game? Hopefully he will be able to contribute in league play. Could we see a battle of the Dorsey brothers on Saturday?

IMO, this thread is very petty. These coaches and players have spent hundreds of hours together practicing, watching video, lifting weights, etc. I'm sure the losing is hard on them. I'm glad BN is trying to find outlets to release the tension and frustration, or just for the players to have some fun. I hope they're also doing frisbee golf, bowling, line dancing and anything else the coaches can think of. And I hope they tweet about it too. This thread is piling on.

Do all that. Don’t tweet about it or communicate it. We don’t need to know. And, yes, don’t post it here either.
What they do as a team beyond playing and practicing is their business and if Nelson wants to share what he does to improve morale, tell it in an interview where he can be asked other questions as well.

I've been saying for years that these should be the best practices of the season with no academic concerns.
However, even I don't think they're doing basketball activities 16 hours a day every day for a month. In the 21st century, Twitter is how you make the fans feel connected with the team. Not my thing, but whatever. Pictures and tweets from practice would get pretty stale after a while. So if you follow twitter, or in my case read Crossports where some people like to post tweets from the team, you're going to see the team working at the soup kitchen, sending out Christmas greetings, reading to little kids, and even engaging in a little down time recreation like teenagers. I don't call this a big positive or a big negative. I suppose photos from dodgeball are better than shots of the guys playing video games which probably takes up more of their free time.
I do admit that when the won loss record is this bad, you are inviting comments like the one shown

I think everyone here except maybe football44 is fine with them playing dodgeball and doing other fun stuff as a team during this month of unlimited practice. Choosing that to be what you tweet about at the moment is what many find to be curious. Again, post some practice videos and pictures to show how much work the guys are putting in to improve individually and collectively. I know they are doing that so why not make that the focus of the social media accounts?

In defense of my post I have no problem with guys having some fun. As an ex player I enjoyed having some fun on off times. My point is that the timing in the posting of the dodgeball game on the HCMBB twitter account when the team hasn’t beaten a quality team yet is ridiculous. People who care about the BB program at HC are truly upset about the teams performance and showing a dodgeball game on the site doesn’t help. Believe me I want the team to be successful. A good BB team at HC helps the HC football team. Nothing like recruiting great football players and bringing them up to a packed Hart Center to watch a winning or competitive BB team. It helps sell both programs. Sorry if some took my post the wrong way. I’ll stay in my (football) lane from now on.😂😂😉😉

While I agree with others that it probably would have been better to keep it private, I don't see it as being a big deal. For all we know, he's been running them ragged all week and decided to give them a break. I don't think going all General Patton or Sgt. Hulka on them is necessarily the right approach to take at this point. EVERY team does this kind of activity! It is still competing and physical activity..The players and coaches need a mental break, they get mentally bored, stagnant, doing the same thing every day..Think about dodge ball, throw the ball (pass it), catch it (use those hands), avoid the ball (move your feet and body) retrieve the ball quickly ( hustle after it while looking around for your next move)....pick out your target( see the court).....It is very similar to many skills needed on the court! I used a game that had no shooting of the ball in practice..It was a passing game that used the entire gym (wall to wall), and forced the players to pass the ball, no dribbles..My players (and managers) worked very hard at this Game, after about 15 minutes they were soaking wet and breathing very hard! They all loved it, Bob Knight used it every "day before" a game....

On the positive side, I do think the healthy return of Dorsey could help the team a good deal. He can put the ball in the basket and is an exceptional passer.

We do that. It’s essentially ultimate frisbee with a basketball. Helps my teams who are predisposed to panicking under pressure in games. Also helps them learn to go to the ball when receiving a pass.

Dmarz Bobby Knight won many national NCAA basketball championships. We ain’t Indiana! I wish you folks would stop talking about how dodgeball helps with other coordination skills. This is about winning and losing not coordination. We’re getting our brains beat in every game. No one here seems concerned. So when you ask me about a participation trophy, that’s what they give out to kids when winning is not as important as playing and having fun. That’s where we’re going with B ball right now. We have a coach that looks great in the first half but can’t make adjustments in the second half of games. Something that Bob Chesney knows how to do.

44, please don't take this the wrong way but do you read anyone else's posts but your own? If so, I can't imagine how you would come to this conclusion that no one seems concerned.
The debate here has been mostly: should there be a change in the head coach immediately; during the season; end of the season; with a very few saying give him another full year after this one. That last small group can be numbered on, at most, 3 fingers. All are in agreement that this is dependent upon what happens in the coming league schedule. That's hardly not caring or being concerned. And, without fear of successful contradiction, it's unanimous that the last 2 seasons have been the worst in Holy Cross basketball history.
The ones that want to give Nelson more time believe that the hole that Carmody and his 2 immediate successors dug the program into will take multiple years to climb out of and they think (ignoring clearly visible evidence) that Nelson can do it.

Sader1970 Sorry for using general terminology but I get what you’re saying. I know everyone on Crossssports cares about the program. I’m not here asking for the coach to be fired. I’m just perplexed that given the teams record the last thing I’d do would be to post pictures of my guys playing dodgeball. Nothing to do with relaxation time or coordination but it really doesn’t look good when you’ve only won 2 games against division 3 teams.

I totally agree with your last statement. Just suggest that a lot of us never would have seen it if you hadn't posted about it. Many of us "old timers" aren't on Twitter . . . . . or FaceBook . . . . or Instagram . . . . or . . . . . . [Hey, Crossports is "cutting edge: for me!]

However, what makes you say he can shoot the ball well? I don't believe we have seen any indication of that.

A lot of years ago I was a coach at an inner city school that had great basketball players. Unfortunately, I coached football! The team was a perennial loser - winning 1 or 2 games a year at best. During that time, a longtime coach told me "to make sure the kids have fun." One game, we played a state power, Naugatuck, and were expected to lose by 50. Knowing we had no chance, we installed the lonesome polecat on offense, and ran about 10 different plays.
We didn't win, as we could stop their offense. But we drove the ball up and down the field, kept the game close and drove the Naugy coaches nuts! I'm told that for 20 years after, they still practice against the polecat when they would prepare to play my school! The kids had fun, and have a lifetime positive memory.

Loved that, '81. In the first sequence one of the D lineman was bouncing around like Blutarsky in front of the sorority house in Animal House. No clue what to do!
I'm not normally one for gimmicks in basketball, but if there was ever the time to consider rolling out something different for the opponents, this would seem to be it. Maybe some half court traps, maybe a 1-3-1 every once in a while, anything that might produce a few more stops.

I certainly am no football coach, but my inclination in defending against this would be to move my two fastest players, regardless of size, to the defensive line to rush the passer uncontested.
