Really, the only statistic that counts for anything is wins and losses. I read that somewhere.

Caro----Okay--let's get to the heart of this matter: you are a basketball expert and your observations are invaluable when it comes to understanding a team or player, correct?

A few points:
Efficiency is one of the better measures we have but it's based on current results and isn't a future predictor of what will happen by itself.
Citadel was a weird example to use. There offensive efficiency is higher than most patriot league teams. They aren't better than Virginia but most teams aren't. Usually when you talk about a team being good at something it's relative to how they are as a whole. Citadel is a good offensive team and a bad team as a whole. Virginia is a good team, so most things of it are going to be pretty good, and I wouldn't say the offensive efficiency is their strongest characteristic as a team. It's like saying a Ferrari is more fuel efficient than an F350, it might be but that's not what it's known for, and that's not why people buy it.

Caro, Of the teams that you judge, other than HC, on the average, how many games of each of those other teams do you watch in a season ?

Caro, Of the teams that you judge, other than HC, on the average, how many games of each of those other teams do you watch in a season ? That's just the thing -- I don't make it a habit of passing judgement on teams without watching them play, or at the very least having a strong understanding of how the program and/or coach has performed in the past and if more of the same should be expected. Virginia is getting tossed around in this thread, and I think they serve as a perfect example of the above. I haven't watched them play this year, but have watched them quite a bit under Tony Bennett in the past few years and can bet I know how they're playing and what to expect from them. And I don't need to look at their "Points per Possession" to figure it out.

Please don't count Lehigh's upcoming win over Cabrini as a WIN. Very embarrassing for the league. Like us scheduling Clark U.

Just out of curiosity, caro, how many games have you seen the Citadel play? Perhaps I am mistaken, but I thought you had arrived at your conclusion based on points per game, which I would consider a statistic, though not a particularly advanced one.

As this started with SOV's evaluation/prediction that AU won't be any good this year, let me state: I've seen every game AU has played this year, AND I think stats are important. To dismiss conclusions based on repeated observation as "the eye test" is also wrong. That is why I'm fairly comfortable saying AU's offense is light years better this year than it was last year. You can say we weren't efficient or our points per possession was poor; all I know is we couldn't bust 50 for the first month last year. Now we're averaging almost 70. People are scoring in the flow of the offense much more consistently. Having a real point guard on the ball who can score and create offense out of defense, along with a young center who has the capability (if not consistency) to score in the post has made us a much more capable offensive team. Again, I'm actually more concerned about our defense at this point.

Assuming Loyola holds on to beat UMASS Lowell, the PL will finish the non-conference with a combined record of 51-68. If we are to eliminate games against the P5 and non-D1 opponents, it's a record of 42-51.
The matching 6-6 records against the Ivy League and MAAC are nice, but it would have been good to be above .500 against the America East. 12-4 vs. the NEC is solid.
