I had thought it was VMI that was the military school down south that played at a break neck pace. Perhaps it is some rite of passage for those in southern military academies... blitzkrieg basketball.

I had thought it was VMI that was the military school down south that played at a break neck pace. The Citadel's coach was the VMI coach for a decade before moving on to The Citadel last year. He had a bit of success with that style but I doubt they will ever be consistently good. As SOV pointed out, they are dead last in the nation in points allowed per possession, and they were close to the bottom last year. At VMI their defense normally was bad as well.

It's such a blah league.....it is what it is. We're well aware... lol...I know...it's just so non-interesting though....I watched high school football on TV rather than the UNH game tonight...yeah, it's great that we can go dancing every so often being in this league/playing at this level but the regular season is ultimately boring to most alums/locals/students imo....I realize there are no easy answers to our quandary but I'm sorry, I just can't get excited/worked up about losing to UNH in basketball. The Patriot League is a good level for our football program (why the Colonial League was created basically)....but it's a snooze for hoop.

The Citadel doesn't play defense, and they play at the fastest pace in the country. That's philosophically worrisome, no? Not according to Loyola Marymount circa 1990

This year's edition of the HC men's basketball team has been consistently inconsistent. We beat Harvard and Albany but lost to Maine!!?
SOV, those non-DI wins should either be eliminated or put a big, fat asterisk when calculating the PL OOC record.

SOV, those non-DI wins should either be eliminated or put a big, fat asterisk when calculating the PL OOC record. If that is the case, then the losses against the power-conferences should also be eliminated. I think the best evaluation is to look at the PL vs the northeastern midmajors: NEC: 8-3 Ivy League: 5-5 MAAC: 4-4 America East: 4-6

Perhaps, Bison. But the PL remains a D-I conference and plays in the same post-season tournaments but the D-II and D-III teams do not.

Perhaps, Bison. But the PL remains a D-I conference and plays in the same post-season tournaments but the D-II and D-III teams do not. PL teams in terms of expenditures on basketball are closer to many D2's than to the Kentucky's of the world. Also of course, over 90% of the "student"-athletes at most power conference schools couldn't even be considered for admission at a PL school. So it's really apples-to-oranges. Not sure what the purpose is of comparing the PL to the ACC or SEC.

Here's how the PL OOC play compares vs. last season in regard to the opponent's rank in KenPom. Please note that the rank for last year is where the team stood at the end of the season, not when it played the game vs the PL team. Of course, the team rankings for this season will change throughout the season, e.g. the HC win over #175 Albany may end up being a win over #267 Albany if the Great Danes finish poorly or a win over #122 Albany if they prosper. You get the idea.
Teams Ranked 1-50 LY= 0-12 TY= 0-11
Teams Ranked 51-100 LY=1-14 TY= 2-9
Teams Ranked 101-150 LY=2-12 TY= 3-6
Teams Ranked 151-200 LY=3-8 TY= 7-10
Teams Ranked 201-250 LY= 8-6 TY=6-8
Teams Ranked 251-300 LY= 10-13 TY= 6-5
Teams Ranked 301 or worse, including NR (D2 & D3) teams LY= 21-5 TY= 12-5
Of course it matters which PL team is playing which opponent, e.g. we'd rather have, say, Bucknell or Lehigh playing a #80 team and Lafayette or Loyola taking the 99.9% chance of a loss versus Kentucky or Duke than vice versa. So, my old market research friends might not consider any conclusions "statistically significant", but that should not stop us from weighing in on this

Recommendation for HC basketball scheduler: Never schedule a 2-1 against a high mid-major, like UMass or URI, especially when the one MUST be at the DCU. Never schedule a $$$ game against a top-20 team, like Syracuse. Do schedule a $$$ game against a UMass or URI-type team at their place on a one game basis. HC COULD someday rise up and beat a UMass/URI/UCF/BC opponent. Contact the Jesuit basketball promotion people to try to get a Xmas tournament going in NYC around Xmas beginning with 4 teams like @fordham, Holy Cross, Loyola Chicago and Fairfield.
