At our 1970 Class dinner, the football team whose 1969 senior season was cancelled due to the hepatitis outbreak were presented with a struck medal with the HC shield logo and on the reverse side saying "Holy Cross Class of 1970 Football - Hepatitis challenged us, we prevailed"
Obviously not all the guys were able to make the reunion and this was a surprise that word never leaked out to them.
I passed out copies of the definitive "The Missing Season" story that was in the Holy Cross Magazine written by sader1998 in the fall of 2004. Many of the guys had either never seen the article or had forgotten about it (they are, after all, 73 +/- years old) but the copies were well received. I passed them out to them before the surprise presentation by Kit Hughes. As Kit was speaking about the missing season, I was taking pictures of them and one of them whispered me over to tell me "he's plagiarizing your son's story!" I assured him the facts were the facts and Kit wasn't cheating.
FWIW, I was able to sit next to Kit for the entire dinner and we talked about a lot of HC athletics with a focus on the transfer portal. I won't get into specifics other than to relate one story. As I posted on the Crossports story about the young lady who has recently given a verbal commitment to the softball team as catcher, I suggested to Kit that the 3 things the softball coach told that recruit were a real way to help ensure fewer transfer losses. Boiled down the essential one was to go to a school that you want to go to even if you weren't on the team. I told Kit that every guy in that ballroom felt that any player should only go to Holy Cross if they loved the school even if they couldn't play due to injury; lack of playing time; not being a starter; cut from the team; think they are too good for the team; etc. I further stated that I did not consider a player, like Avery LaBarbara, who enters the transfer portal to go to grad school as a true "transfer." They don't count - we don't have a grad school. (He totally agreed). I suggested to him that if all our coaches used the same points with recruits as the softball coach, we'd probably see less transfer losses. I used Bob Chesney as an example. He's got 90 player and the percentage of true transfers out of his program is much smaller than most other coaches on the hill (no, I was diplomatic and did not name any specific coaches but suspect he knows who I was talking about). Kit said that he totally agreed with my points (the man's a genius!!). I know he thinks very, very highly of Bob Chesney.
I apologize for the digression. This is intended as kudos to my Classmates but I am just too tired and too lazy to set up a second thread. Here's a picture of Kit with the 1970 players who were at the reunion dinner:
