Been told by multiple primary sources Luke Newman is the top NFL prospect on the current roster.

Do they really clock a player's speed during a game?

One of 13 non-FBS players to make the list (100).
Here is the full write-up for those who don't subscribe to the Athletic:
NFL scouts like his tape and think he’s an intriguing prospect who is really instinctive. He has been a team captain since his sophomore year and has been a tremendous leader for the three-peat Patriot League Champion Crusaders. In 2021, he received All-American honors and was the league’s defensive player of the year; he notched 137 tackles, 17.5 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 6 quarterback hurries, and 3 PBUs. His athleticism is also evident in the Holy Cross training program, where the 6-0, 235-pounder with just 9 percent body fat has power-cleaned 365; vertical-jumped 36.5 inches, run a 4.65 laser-timed 40; done a laser-timed 4.02 pro shuttle; clocked 22.57 mph in a game and bench pressed 435.

Do they really clock a player's speed during a game? They use a pacer car on Rte. 290.

Do they really clock a player's speed during a game? In practice they do. And it's not Jackie Mo and a stopwatch.

I understand that but it says: "clocked 22.57 mph in a game . . . . "
Practice, I buy. Game, not so much unless they are talking about a intra-squad scrimmage "game."
Remember "You Asked For It?" Pretty sure they had a sprinter go 1 on 1 with a thoroughbred over some fairly short distance (100-200 yards) and won.

A $5,000 claimer would crush Usain Bolt in a 100 or 200 yard race.

Looks like we have two threads going simultaneously about this: here was my 2 cents in the other “Jake has said publicly that in training preparation for his pro-day that he thinks can run a 4.6 flat or faster and believes he can get 30 on the 225 bench (which is utterly ridiculous for someone ~230-235 lbs) He hit 370 on his clean which tied for the team high with Kuz pre camp. He’s definitely closer to 5’11 flat than 6’0 but that’s not a huge deal. I’d be curious to see Jake’s 10 and 20 yd split in his 40 compared to Anderson. I guarantee it’s the last 20 yards when Anderson gets to that 4.5 flat with his stride. I noticed it on his G’Town pick 6 that he kicks into another gear.”

Yeah, I am a little perpelxed about how this "timing someone's mph in a game" thing works. First of all, if Dobbs ran a laser timed 4.65 40 yard trial under ideal conditions, that translates to about 17 mph on average. Now, if he averaged 17 mph, he was certainly running faster than that by the finish line. In fact, I would say he was accelerating the whole way since you can't get tired in 40 yards. I am not sure that it is possible to identify his top speed retroactively.
As to the in-game time, I guess we would want to know how far he was timed running There are not a lot of opportunities for him to run far enough to get up to full speed in a game. I would think that this would only occur if he was chasing a ball carrier from behind. I just have a hard time thinking that it football cleats and pads in the middle of the game he could get going that fast.
I have confidence that all of the stats other than this one are valid and think this kid is an absolutely beast.

I just looked it up -- there were five LBs drafted in 2022 who were listed at 6'0 and shorter. I thought his stature may be a turnoff to NFL teams.
Midwest, what position / role would Dobbs project to be at the next level?

Midwest, what position / role would Dobbs project to be at the next level? And plenty more guys under 6’0 signed undrafted free agent contracts. Several will make 53 man rosters or practice squads. He will be an ILB of some sort and it will be up to his agent to steer him toward the best fit for his skills. Is that a 4-3 MLB or 3-4. (I would think the latter) He can play on every ST which is a huge advantage. Most optimistic case is he makes a 53 man roster somewhere eventually as a back-up ILB and starter on 3-4 ST’s. Long and prosperous career by just doing that. Biggest key to longevity will be staying healthy.

Blake Costnazo (Lafayette) had a very nice and lengthy career playing a pretty similar role to what you’re describing.

Biggest difference is Rodriguez ran 4.52 (36 reps of 225 BTW) as well as quality of competition. Height and length (and ‘bulky’ build) and agility were of concern to the scouts regarding Rodriguez.

Yes, time was combine and bench was pro day. Your above quote notes Jacob is hoping to hit 30 his pro day. When you read Rodriguez was originally recruited as an athletic safety to Oklahoma State and was an elite wrestler it is clear that 5’11 guys gotta be something special (understanding all drafted guys are something special). www.heartlandcollegesports.com/2022/03/24/watch-oklahoma-state-lb-malcolm-rodriguez-makes-36-reps-on-bench-press-look-easy/

My former neighbor, Beasley Reece (NYG CB nd FS) did that several times - short sprints. He was undefeated, but also smart enough to never take on a horse at a distance over 100 yards.
