We may not have landed a running back on this list but you have to live the depth we have at the position.
Also I can’t wait to see how our new NJ running back does when he starts getting touches as a frosh or maybe as a sophomore

It’s not going to take much of a lane for his burst to kick in. Kid gets to top end speed in his initial 5-7 yards.

We can use a burner in the backfield and if he’s one, Chesney will get him in there - frosh or otherwise.

I believe he finished second in the State of New Jersey in the 55 meter race. I've watched him on tape and we do not have a back like him (Slade) on the roster. He's not only straight line fast but his cutting ability is unbelievable. You get him and space and watch out! I personally would like to see Coach Smith spread the offense and get the tight end Petersen out wide and open it up even more for Sluka and others to put pressure on the defense. Nightmare for the Patriot League!!!

Comparisons to the great Dom Cozier? Yes but with more lateral movements. I know Dom great young man away from the field.

I love all our RBs. Oliver, Purdy, Forrest, Fuller. Looking forward to Slade joining this group and seeing if he can make an impact this season.
Question for all of our armchair coordinators:
Is there a way we can utilize more 2 back sets in the offense to keep the D guessing? How about some old time “full house” backfield formations?!? I’d love to see a backfield with Oliver, Fuller, and Slade.
I think our RB depth this season will be a major factor in our overall success.

It’s a good question. My impression is as follows: Our tendency last season was to run more “12 personnel” (2 TEs and 1 RB) offensive sets instead of “21” (two RBs and 1 TE). A couple things to consider: Sluka in the shotgun is essentially a second RB teams have to account for. In Many of these sets, you will see one of the TE’s go in motion, come across the line of scrimmage and basically act as lead blocker (FB) type on designed runs. Sean Morris is usually in this role (although I saw both Petersen and Honohan do it as well). My guess is Morris is the best lead blocker (H-back/FB) type on the offense so we use him that way. There is a reason he’s a 1st team all-PL TE with only 5 catches. He’s an absolutely ferocious blocker. The one set we routinely use multiple backs in the backfield is our short yardage/goal line sets when Fuller is the deep back but again it was usually one or more of the TE’s joining him in the backfield. Not to say this can’t change but just my take on why we haven’t seen two or more of our traditional RB’s together in the backfield at the same time.

Midwestsader—thanks once again for sharing your invaluable insights about our team. I recall being very excited when hearing of Sean Morris’s signing with HC and I expected him to catch a ton of passes. Of course I was aware of the critical importance of good blocking but your explanation of the way Sean executed his key role in the offense is really helpful.
