I assume the Confederate names went up in the first place to appease the Southern voting Block in Congress, not because these Generals fought for the U.S. They fought for a separate country against the U.S.
So now that other forces have political power, let's enjoy some new names. But keep them within the Sensible Center. No Fort AOC please.🙂

A quick look appears no Union generals or soldiers as I assume that would be equally divisive otherwise MOH Joshua Chamberlain for me.

Fort Moore, BTW, will honor both LTG Hal Moore and his wife, Julie. The new name for Fort Benning is an inspired choice given their accomplishments and ties to the post.

I believe Hal Moore is an officer revered by his men. As for Joshua Chamberlain, it appears they assiduously sought to name the forts after 20th Century soldiers, aside from the Civil War nurse who received the MoH. At the back of the Commission report, url above, there is a list of what I would call the semi-finalists. ___________ I had to look up fort Jackson. I believed it was named after "Stonewall", but 'no'. It was named after Andrew Jackson.

"This war, being at an end, the Southern States having laid down their arms, and the questions at issue between them and the Northern States having been decided, I believe it to be the duty of everyone to unite in the restoration of the country and the reestablishment of peace and harmony."--Robert E. Lee"This resolution passed by the Congress responds to the formal application of General Lee to President Andrew Johnson on June 13, 1865, for the restoration of his full rights of citizenship. Although this petition was endorsed by General Grant and forwarded to the President through the Secretary of War, an Oath of Allegiance was not attached because notice of this additional requirement had not reached Lee in time. Later, after his inauguration as President of Washington College on October 2, 1865, Lee executed a notarized Oath of Allegiance. Again his application was not acted upon because the Oath of Allegiance was apparently lost. It was finally discovered in the National Archives in 1970." A bipartisan proclamation, approved 407-10 by a Democratic Congress and signed by a Republican President. That doesn't work in 2022, sir. www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/speeches/750473.htm

We honored General Moore, a Kentucky native, here in The Ville a number of years ago as part of the Catholic Education Foundation’s annual fund raising dinner.

I recommend anybody to read his story. It is bravery on a different level. Students enjoyed doing a lesson on the Massachusetts 54th There is a statue for him Sgt. Carney's statue is in his hometown at West Point Cemetery (Norfolk, Virginia), atop a monument to African American Civil War and Spanish American War veterans. I agree they should name a Fort after him.

Sgt. Carney's life and deeds were most impressive. Those who want to desecrate flags should read what he did to preserve his unit's colors. May his soul rest in peace and his descendents be able to carry on the memory of his deeds and honors.
