Does the team vote on captains or does Chesney award them? dad22?
Congrats to these five.

Nothing against any of these guys but 5 seems a bit excessive. Good old days, 1 or 2. I'm OK with 3 but anything more seems to water down the honor.
Then again, what do I know?

I played in the early 90s. We always had 4. Loved it. Congrats to these guys.

Ain't the good old days anymore. If the team and the coaches voted on 5 captains then I'm good with it. They know more about what each of these guys brings to the team then any of us with opinions on this message board.

Number of captains is very low on my list of things to worry about 3 days before opening night.

I don’t disagree but this being an opinion board, I expressed my opinion. I would also agree, to make the point, if the team wanted 10 captains, so be it.
Here’s the thing, and yes I know it’s different, how many captains on a ship? How many are captains of airliners?
I had a couple of expressions when working:
1. If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority. 2. If everyone is in charge, no one is in charge.
And your rebuttal would correctly be, there’s only one head football coach.
It was also interesting that when Marcus left and before Kit came on board, somehow or for some reason, the two associate ADs were both in charge. My “old school” way of management thinking is, pick one.

Then again, what do I know? 2 or 3 is a common number on a 13 man basketball squad. Not surprised at all at a higher number for a larger roster. The New England Patriots had 5 captains last year. I would agree that the ship/airliner analogy is different. Although the title is the same, those are very different positions. Those captains are in charge. A sports team captain is not in charge. A sports team captain is someone who has demonstrated leadership but has no real authority. I agree that the acting co-AD's plan was not sustainable. It probably worked short term because there was an understanding that all major decisions would be postponed until the new AD was hired
