In our two FCS wins, we’ve had 19 penalties for a total of 195 yards. Is this sustainable? Feels like we’ll need to clean it up if we want to advance deep into the FCS tourney. Only 4 for 25 against Buffalo, which I think is a big part of the reason we were able to win.

I agree and it’s a good point. It’s been moot at this point because of the point differential but in a close game it will hurt them.
I heard a stat today on ticket sales. Pre-order for today were 8,500.
Pre-order for Parents Weekend - Fordham - are at 13k. Not sure if it’s true but this is what I’ve heard.

Hope it's true about the Fordham game. Heard on other occasions rumors of a fantastic crowd; when I got there I'd say 75% of that day's fantastic crowd were disguised as empty seats.

The Fordham game should be the biggest crowd in many years. League title on the line. Two ranked teams. Thousands of extra fans in the form of family members of HC students. Bad weather is the only thing that could screw it up.

Can live with some holding penalties and others of that ilk as that’s just part of football…but unsportsmanlike / late hits are inexcusable.

As far as penalties....You just crushed Yale and stole their lunch money. Who cares. This team plays on the edge and backs it up.
It's very different feeling around Fitton right now. Enjoy it.

Its the type of penalties as well the running to the kicker seemed to be an experience problem. 2 guys side by side had clear path. first missed the ball off the foot the other arrive a tad late & didn't/couldn't pull off a couple of late face mask calls in scrums when the RB was stopped

The unsportsmanlike penalties, if they occur regularly, show a lack of discipline. I had to be in NH this weekend so I went to the Dartmouth-Valparaiso game (while watching the HC on my phone, to the consternation of my wife). Valpo was managing to hang around and give Dartmouth a game until they started getting a lot of penalties, including a number of unsportsmanlike penalties (tearing off a player's helmet, late hits out of bounds). Chesney needs to reinforce the need to avoid these penalties.

Definitely not the same type of penalties overall as Merrimack. There was one roughing the passer and one facemask where we gave the QB a little extra while wrestling him to the ground.

I do.
1. "Mistake" penalties are part of the game but should be very few for an experienced, disciplined team. 2. Face masks, unsportsmanlike, roughing the passer come under the heading of "dirty" IMO, and that should never be part of Holy Cross play (running into the passer usually more a mistake- see #1 above) 3. You never know exactly what penalty might cost you a game. Oftentimes penalties are the difference makers, the momentum shifters.
I do recognize, however, some football players on the Crusader team have non-pathological split personalities as Chris Smith told me of one offensive lineman I know he described as a true madman on the field but once off the field is the nicest, gentlest person you'll find. The trick is to make sure that even on the field, you don't cross the refs' line.

My main point above is that we can’t have 19 penalties for 195 yards in two FCS games if we want to compete for a national title. Yes, we can beat Yale and Merrimack giving them 100 free yards. I don’t know that any of the penalties yesterday was particularly dirty. The roughing the passer is a split-second thing between being a penalty or not. Wasn’t like we hit him 3 seconds after he threw it. The face mask I’d have to see on replay.

I believe the face mask was Jacob Dobbs putting the QB in a head lock. Maybe you can't even touch the face mask even if you are not grabbing it with your hands to facilitate a stop.

Was there any special buzz in (Memorial?) Stadium to be playing an exotic team from far away or any significant Valpo fan presence?

On the running into the kicker, they said the ball was not touched. However, on the replay it did appear the ball may have been touched when it shot off at an angle and out of bounds. Oh well.

Pretty laid back vibe overall. Valpo had some skill players on offense, and a very good placekicker, but not great on defense. Not much size. There was no buzz, more of a "let's go get in some sunbathing at Memorial" vibe. I do like Memorial as a venue, though, and love Hanover.

Bringing in lights for one of the four Fitton games has merit but this one is at the end of October and has a television slot on Spectrum1 at 1pm as well as family members aged 8 to 80 planning to attend Family weekend who might not be the prime target of a night game.
