The December 19, 1969 edition of “The Crusader” has the article on page 8, regarding the recognition ceremonies to Sacramento State, at the O’Melia Arabs dinner, as well as a presentation to Mike Carter, Sacramento State Football Captain, before the Yale basketball game. As you can see while reading the newspaper, it was a turbulent and tumultuous week at HC crossworks.holycross.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2844&context=crusaderEvery time I look at an old issue of the Crusader to check out some sports story, I end up checking out the entire issue. Today, that interrupted my morning coffee and sent me to the next issue to see the followup on the GE story. Here is the link crossworks.holycross.edu/crusader/1500/There was no internet and no Crosssports in those days , so alumni reaction involved letters to the editor.Check out the letter from a 1965 grad which,as I read it, takes the position that the white students were wronged. He threatens to withhold his donations, as alumni continue to do today. Also look at the letter from Joseph Reilly '55 who uses a rape metaphor to describe the college's treatment by the student protesters. (He also suggests that actual rape victims entice their attackers by the way they dress although he does note that the rapist is the one who "loses virtue.") Research suggests that Mr. Reilly was the grandfather of the woman who wrote the Fenwick Review piece which we debated a few years ago. Also take a look at the interesting letter by Mike Falivena '63. At some point, I have to read about last night's playoff games. Any chance the Yankees lost? I could not find the letter by Mike Falivena '63, aka "Sarasota", but there is a quirky and inventive article by Edward P. Jones, Pulitzer Prize winning author.

Thanks! It was very interesting and quite left leaning in it's arguments. Quite a different era for him.

I found page 10 more interesting about 2 Classmates who were drafted by the NFL despite the '69 cancelled season. Unfortunately, neither Gary nor Vic are still with us. R.I.P. guys.

I always wonder what Bill Whitton did with the rest of his life. Did nothing but coach football after Ww2 and college. Never coached again after 1970. Lived another 37 years. His obituary says after Holy Cross he coached HS football in North Plainfield NJ and taught social studies and later coached at St Pius HS in Piscataway NJ Thanks for the info, all I spotted was Wikipedia and his activities after 1970-71 were not mentioned. In those days, teaching and coaching in high school wasn't a big pay cut (if any) from coaching Holy Cross.

Bob is ‘71 and became a Jesuit. A distant Irish cousin of our current head coach maybe?
