I just got unofficial word that my Classmate, Mark Doherty. D.M.D., passed away last Friday (10/7/2022) after a long, courageous battle with throat cancer.
Mark was a fighter, literally, having won the New England Golden Gloves title in 1969 in Lowell, MA. Mark was also a linebacker on the ill-fated 1969 football team that lost its battle against hepatitis that forced the cancellation of the season after only 2 games, losses to both Harvard and Dartmouth as virtually the entire team was ill and became apparent in the Dartmouth game that the season could not continue bringing the football careers to an unexpected end for members of the Class of 1970. In that second game, against Dartmouth, with players dropping on the field and running out of quarterbacks, Mark was pressed into service as QB though he was a linebacker.
Mark had a very successful career in dentistry and was noted for his mentorship of young people in the field.
While they used to archive past Holy Cross Magazines on-line, they no longer go back this far, but if you have old copies of the HC Magazine, Mark's stories (football) was in the fall, 2004 edition in "The Missing Season" story and again (boxing) in the winter, 2004 edition in "The Fight Club."

May his soul rest in peace. He lived through many tough battles in his life and I pray he is now reaping the rewards that his struggles earned.

Unfortunate news, but thank you for sharing.
Mark was a fierce competitor and a great guy. He fought hard, and through a few notes we exchanged, it was clear that he found the strength to fight cancer through his wife and faith.
RIP

I was, at times, on his midfield line. When that line came off, Mark moved to an attack position. Definitely didn’t want to come off the field. Just a great athlete and person.

Thanks for posting this. I have this around the house somewhere but couldn't find it. Such a vibrant guy who was full of life. He'll be missed.
