With all the success of this season so far and hopefully beyond for football, it is still disappointing that we don't have a crusader mascot on the sidelines. I wonder how many of the "offended" people are still actually on campus or have they moved on to their next crusade ? How cool would it be to have a real person wearing chain mail or silver armor charge in on a horse and stick a sword in the middle of the field pre-game similar to Florida state. I remember someone telling me that we did have a "live" mascot on horseback maybe in the 70's, does anyone have a photo of that? I did see a fan in full knighted gear at the Yale game tailgate on the baseball field which was pretty cool. No word yet if anyone needed to go under the stands to hyperventilate at the very sight of him....

OK, guys, don’t blame me for bringing this subject back up but . . .
At the women’s soccer game on Saturday there was a guy in a homemade Crusader uniform with shield and sword. Looked like a college-age male and I went up to him asked him why he was wearing a forbidden costume and was he an HC student.
He said that he did not go to HC but was a brother of one of the players and that the Crusader was “the best mascot there is.”

Is the Crusader mascot actually "forbidden?" That makes me want to go get one immediately.

I suppose it could be worse. Somebody might have decided that today was a good day to start a thread demanding that Gordie Lockbaum be named AD.

With rake, shovel and a large enough plastic bag it need not be that bad.

Since my reenacting unit helped with reenacting Washington's oath of office in NYC, my buddy and I have a standing invitation to join the Masons. They said they would not be bothered by the fact both of us are Knights of Columbus. We passed on their generous offer...even after they allowed us to hold the bible used by Washington himself (and all Masonic Presidents since then).

Fran Quinn The Crusader mascot kid just graduated from Lehigh.

I scrolled through much of the Purple Patcher that Crucis#1 was kind enough to share with us. One small oddity: I'd estimate that 20% of the faculty members were smoking pipes! The over/under for pipe smoking profs today would be 2.

IIRC, the Boston Herald sportswriter who first coined the crusader nickname for Holy Cross (ending the tenure of the [Indian] Chiefs) was from a Masonic family prominent in Worcester. nationalsportsmedia.org/awards/hall-of-fame/1974-stanley-woodward

You are probably 100% right. He told me his sister's number. My defective memory was #25 but #23 is Katie Quinn and he was tall and lanky like she is. I loved his attitude. It was like "yeah, I'm wearing this Crusader costume. Who's going to stop me?" (i.e. can't kick me out of school, I don't go here. )

Any recent college grad who is showing up in Worcester to watch his kid sister’s soccer game can wear whatever he wants as far as I’m concerned.

IIRC there was a low (3 or 4 foot) chain link fence between the field and the home stands back in the day. The horse and rider were contained within those confines. Did not come onto the field itself.
Wasn't a feature of every game, only a few of them.

With rake, shovel and a large enough plastic bag it need not be that bad. Agree. Just one animal shouldn't be a problem, nothing like Mackinac Island where cars are banned and horses are common. There, a whole group of guys with brooms and shovels are needed to keep the town's streets clean.

Thanks! I did not know that the yearbooks were online. The color picture of the huge bonfire right at the beginning of the book is from a football pep rally my freshman year before the Dartmouth game. Dennis Golden did a great job of rallying the troops while speaking from the O'Kane porch before we all marched down to Freshman Field.
