I disagree. This year UConn was a fiasco at the FBS level. If UConn played Holy Cross's schedule, they would go undefeated. Holy Cross should not be playing any FBS school until they are a consistent winner at the FCS level. I can see Maine or New Hampshire playing UConn, but not Holy Cross. Actually, Maine played UConn this year and gave them a run for their money before losing in the final seconds. Holy Cross has a long way to go before it can be competitive with a FBS school. Despite UConn's problems this year, I see them blowing out Holy Cross next year.

Well written and funny piece.
The hilarious thing about UConnvict is that their insufferable honks felt this absolutely atrocious FB squad deserved a spot in the Big 12.

Despite UConn's problems this year, I see them blowing out Holy Cross next year. UConn's last four FCS games: 2013 Towson L 33-18 2014 Stony Brook W 19-16 2015 Villanova W 20-15 2016 Maine W 24-21 If I was expecting us to be a top-three team in the PL next year, I'd be pretty optimistic that we could give the Huskies a run. However, I don't think we'll be that good and by this point UConn must know that they need to take FCS teams seriously. I thought they were going to be a bowl team this year -- looks like the wheels just completely came off the bus in mid-October. They had AAC West champ Navy on the ropes in Week 2 before the Mids scored with under a minute left. DISAGREE on playing FBS schools. Scheduling these games is a must for recruiting, and they will be positive learning experiences for the players, in addition to bringing in a paycheck. Take a look at the ESPN bottom line -- plenty of schools far worse than Holy Cross play FBS "body bag" games against much stronger programs than UConn.

agree that we should be able to compete with uconn, esp with pujals at qb. their frosh qb was absolutely terrible in the final 4 games when he took over for Sheriffs. uconn finished dead last in points per game in all of fbs. their program is in total disarray at this moment

I'd love to think we can pull the upset but, by my count, TG is 0-13 in what I consider to be FCS reach games (all against the CAA) so I'm not expecting this to be "the one". That being said, we are riding a one-game FBS/I-A winning streak

Hey, we beat Northeastern and they were CAA. Granted, this was the season they dropped their program.
There's no reason we shouldn't be competitive against UConn.
Plus, we beat Albany two seasons ago.

Plus, we beat Albany two seasons ago. With Pujals and everyone else on offense healthy - HC can score vs UConn, however with a nod to Bart Scott, the HC Defense couldn't stop a nosebleed - and that's the problem, and it will be a problem until that side of the ball gets some playmakers.

Flaherty and Wieczorek are two huge losses for PP and the offense. Not sure who will step up but I wouldn't assume we're going to put up a lot of points on an FBS defense, particularly if we can't run the football at all.

UConn was terrible this year. Was at Maine game. Maine should have won. Black Bears outplayed them. UConn's QB at the time was the difference in that game. Diaco should be fired.

If anyone should be fired it's those who thought that UConn could consistently compete successfully at the FBS level. They don't have 100 years of football tradition, few in Connecticut live and die for UConn football, and the place is located in a part of the country where interest in football centers on the NFL. The same goes for another train wreck, UMass. The pair of them should go back to playing FCS opponents exclusively.

Here's the message sent out this morning by the AD:
Friends, I want to make you aware of changes to the University’s Football Program announced today. Coach Bob Diaco is being relieved of his duties as head coach. I am grateful to Coach Diaco for his hard work while at the University and certainly wish him future success. He and his staff worked hard to provide a quality experience for our student-athletes, encouraging them to succeed both on and off the field. Their commitment to academic success and the integrity with which they ran this program will benefit the University well into the future. I know this comes as a surprise given the timing. However, it became apparent that a change in program direction was necessary at this time. We will move swiftly to identify a new head coach to lead this program and student-athletes well into the future and build a competitive FBS football program with consistent and sustained success. I want to thank you in advance for your continued support during this transition and please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions. Respectfully, David

Has to be some OC or DC of a big program they lined up on the sly (or a head coach retread; and there are meany of those)...you wouldn't just throw the job open right now otherwise. You would have let the guy go the first of the month.

I imagine we simply must now wait and see what the new edition UConn will look like and how that will impact Holy Cross. I agree that there is a new "coach-in-waiting" who will be announced quickly. To actually start a search at this time would be, IMO, a real blunder, unless something happened of which the public is unaware.

Per 247, UConn presently 108th in 2017 recruiting. BC at least has national cache and is in a Power 5. With no indigenous recruiting base, UConn and UMass are screwed trying to compete in FBS.

We're being shown some mercy by the football gods by getting UConn as our next FBS game. Could have been Navy. Think about that for a minute.

Impossible for UMass to compete in 1A FB as an independent much longer. They either play schools they have zero shot of ever beating, or terrible far-flung no-names that very few have any interest in watching. UMass has even resorted to a 5th yr senior and Juco transfer recruiting strategy across the board in a quick-fix attempt, which is no way to build a program, as turnover is great and cohesiveness is clearly lacking season to season.
