The only private institution with an attendance exceeding HC was Harvard. Among non state affiliate institutions HC was #2 in the nation.

Harvards average attendance is inflated because of “The Game”. They don’t draw for any other.

Harvards average attendance is inflated because of “The Game”. They don’t draw for any other. The two games I did there was 10,793 against Princeton on a Friday night and 13,972 against Columbia on a Saturday afternoon. Those are basically average Holy Cross attendance numbers.

Traditional regular opponents BU, Northeastern, and BC all are out of FCS Football. Some say the Ivies hold back Holy Cross and we should dump them in favor of CAA opponents. But I hope we can keep this last remaining Worcester-Boston regular Football series alive. Of course if we beat the Eagles in September they deserve an immediate rematch at Fitton in 2024.

Harvards average attendance is inflated because of “The Game”. They don’t draw for any other. I watched every HC home game on ESPN+ this year. Based on what I could see (and hear from the announcers), I'm surprised our average home attendance was as high as this stat sheet says it was. No doubt the Fordham game and the Bucknell tilt at Polar Field helped. As did the fact that we only had five home games this year. Otherwise, I would have thought average Fitton attendance was between 8,000 and 9,000. I agree about Harvard, although another poster points out that the Crimson had nice crowds against Princeton (no surprise there) and Columbia this year. (I saw a Columbia-Harvard game in September 2000 when my daughter was a student at Harvard Business School. If there were 3,000 patrons in the joint, I'd be surprised. There was no doubt some special incentive for the Columbia game this year (e.g., employee appreciation day or something), but hats off to Al Bagnoli for raising the Lions from the football graveyard in recent years!)

Hard to gauge attendance with the cameras all on the home side. They try to give an occasional shot of the home side crowd from a handheld camera on the HC sideline but tough to guess attendance. I went to most of the home games and thought the attendance numbers were generally in the right ballpark.

Some perspective...Obviously, the last few years have been an anomaly. Five years ago some alums were calling for dropping football entirely due to poor performance and lack of interest. Four consecutive championships have seemingly solved everything for now. Doubting Thomas...
