The shooting incident happened in November of 22. Must have been the beginning of the current season. Claim is it was in self-defense.

NM State's pretty much the only school in the current WAC with any basketball tradition* and they've made some dance appearances recently.
I'd figure they'd be winning or close to winning that league, yet they were dead last. Strange goings on.
*Seattle is in second place; great team in the 50s and 60s, no post season appearances since 1968. Dropped to D2 for 30 years.

I think Seattle was NAIA.
The WAC has totally flipped membership-wise since the FBS football conference went under. NMSU the last holdout from those days.

I think the player shot and killed a UNM student in self-defense. He was lured to a campus dorm by UNM co-ed but it was actually an ambush. He was shot at and shot back. Whether either or both were carrying legally, I'm not sure. This took place this past September. And then a couple months later the NMSU basketball bus was pulled over and raided by police on a road trip.

Apparently the WCC has not let Seatle rejoin the league after they returned to D-1. If Gonzaga doesn't want an additional two league games, well I guess they are the 600 lb. Gorilla in that conference.

The WCC has added teams relatively recently (Pacific and BYU). Could be the WCC doesn't view Seattle as a program that brings enough to the table just yet.
They could always had Chaminade as well if they decide everyone could use a Hawaii trip each winter.

Interesting timeline of schools in and out of that league; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Coast_Conference Seattle was in it only 10 years, which surprised me (thought they were always in it until they downgraded the program). Pacific, to paraphrase the famous line from Godfather 3, thought they were out, then they pulled them back! Portland, the Zags and San Diego were all later additions.

That seems strange. If the NMSU guy was at UNM for a game or scrimmage (otherwise why was he on a team bus?) why was he anywhere near a dorm. I don't think visiting teams generally have a lot of alone time to wander the campus

Look at their schedule, shooting was early 11/19, teams had been scheduled to play 11/19. Further helping facilitate it (by "it" I don't mean the shooting, but the intended meeting on campus with the female that lured him there), and I am a little hazy on this point, one of the NMSU hoops players had a car there, or they had a friend that came up for the game that had a car.

The KFOX article I posted does not mention the timing about sneaking out after curfew, but that makes It pops up in some articles...prosecutors and law enforcement tend to downplay the bad acts of their victims. NMU students are charged with setting up and assaulting the shooter who was shooting in self defense. While the bad act of "breaking curfew" pales in comparison to the bad acts of the people who were setting him up, nobody wants to highlight any of his bad acts. While this axiom doesn't apply perfectly to every case, it does to many where there is some kind of relationship or interaction between defendant and victim...If the police make the defendant out to be a dirtbag, the victim likely isn't a choirboy himself

I can’t imagine any AD looking at HC’s record over the past four years and saying “Brett Nelson is the guy we need to lead our program”
