Sometimes those buyout clauses (I’m assuming we’ve got one in the Chesney contract) actually work in retaining coaches. Reportedly Notre Dame was about to sign Andy Ludwig (OC, Utah) as their new OC. Buyout was approx 2.8M. Notre Dame hoped to negotiate this down but Utah didn’t budge. So Notre Dame backed down from their top choice. (Presumably Alabama paid Tommy Rees’ buyout to Notre Dame when they lured him away from ND a few weeks ago.) www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/utah-offensive-coordinator-andy-ludwig-to-remain-with-team-after-interviewing-with-notre-dame-per-reports/amp/Interesting to see how the ND fans react (knowing ND has a huge pocketbook, believing this guy is an upgrade from Tommy Rees, hearing ND proclaim national championship ambitions, and knowing this guy was the top choice of the popular head coach) as well as Utah fans (knowing their OC is seriously interviewing).

“Before I interview with you, I want to have your commitment to buying out my Utah contract at $2.8MM if you should offer me the job. There is no sense wasting your time or mine, and having news of our negotiations go public, if you cannot make that commitment.”

He may have gotten a raise at Utah, and is now on the national radar being seen as a great Offensive Coordinator while the majority of the country has actually watched very, very little Utah football. I was personally surprised that ND media/fans were so excited about a guy who's spent the last 10 years at Cal, San Diego State, Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, and Utah. Ludwig does not appear to be the guy who was going to make ND competitive against the Georgias and Alabamas in the College Football Playoffs.

Apparently they knew the precise buyout size interviewed him, invited him to ND where he attended an ND sports game w/ an ND staffer (spotted by all the bloggers and podcasters)…and thought they could negotiate the price way down. Apparently negotiating the contract stated price is quite common (ND may have just done so with OC Tommy Reese and Alabama) ) but Utah has lost this very same OC coach before. Very bad look for ND in a number of directions at once. Including (but not limited to) their further OC search efforts.

Notre Dame fans saw that Utah was ranked 10 at the end of this year and 12 the end of last year and think he'll do even better with the (presumably better) ND roster. I can recall Ludwig being red hot following a nice 2008 season (if you call beating Michigan and Alabama, finishing undefeated, and ranked 2 nice) and know he's moved around a bit since then.
