Interesting read.
Why don't Worcester college students stay after graduation?

Sort of a "DUH!" reaction that students leave Worcester to follow where the jobs are (or grad schools).
But:
A few more observations. If 2/3s spend the majority of time on campus, considering classes, labs, homework, the rare basketball game in the Hart Center and even rarer football game in Fitton, etc. that should be sort of obvious. But that still leaves 1/3 of Worcester collegians saying they spend the majority of time off campus (off-campus students? Worcester resident day students?).
Other comment: this seems to be one of Vince Rougeau's areas of focus - to reconnect with Worcester. And we know Holy Cross students do lots of work in Worcester whether at things like Nativity school, Worcester Works, SPUD, etc.

Why would students leave when there is the fabulous Polar Park with the WooSox located in the Canal District where there are always businesses coming AND going all the time?

I'm going to ask Gordie Lockbaum, Larry Haley, Frank Kartheiser, et al. Oh yeah, and Cousy.

You mean other than Gordie who was listed? (You should have used 34 years as your cut-off ) Clowning aside I actually have a decent number of names from the last 10 years, but it would be of little value to list them here because they are not well known athletes. Back in the olden days 100 grads might stay in the city. Now it's more like a couple of dozen. The numbers are way off, but some grads are staying

No matter where the minor league team in question happens to be located, the season is in nearly total opposition to the academic year.

"It's quite common that liberal arts students don't know exactly where they're going to go. They've not taken a specialized degree like law or economics." What? 1) Law is a graduate study which many LA students gear their undergrad towards and 2) Economics is a liberal arts course of study.
2010 is over a decade ago now but I'll give my hopefully-not-too-dated two cents. When I was in school, there are not even a handful of Worcester based companies offering internship programs at HC or directly recruiting after graduation through partnerships with Career Services. I think I knew more classmates at UMASS Med the first year out of school than I did classmates who had out-of-college jobs in the city. The only two companies I even vaguely remember recruiting on campus were Hanover Insurance and a wind-energy startup firm, and they might've each hired 2-3 grads per class, tops.
Seemingly everyone who went straight to the workforce after school went to either Boston, New York or DC. Very rarely did you hear about anyone moving to any of the other major New England cities after school either, unless they were from there originally - talking about Providence, Hartford and Portland, so it's not just an issue of local grads not wanting to stay in Worcester in particular. My first job offer was actually Providence-based but I opted to come home to NY instead, where I've remained since.
The other thing about my year and the year ahead of me was that we graduated into the teeth of the Great Recession so the % of grads with a professional offer in hand right out of school was lower than normal. Much more so for the Class of 2009 -- so I might not have the best input compared to other younger posters.
