Amazing to think of what schools (in today's context) aren't in this pool.....very different world then.

Amazing to think of what schools (in today's context) aren't in this pool.....very different world then. I was actually surprised to see Southern Cal ranked that high that early in the history of college football. When my grandfather was at Admiral Farragut military academy in Englewood, NJ as a PG in the mid-forties, they recruited him pretty hard. He ended up at the Naval Academy and they played a series with SC while he was there. The Mids beat them both times fairly easily, I actually got to watch video footage of one of the games from either '49 or '50. And the Navy teams my grandfather played on weren't great. Army was a machine at that time.

Army was a machine at that time. USC-Notre Dame is an ancient rivalry and in the 30's Notre Dame and USC were close matchups. USC won a couple of national championships ('31 and '32) and Notre Dame won at least one national championship ('30) and was in the running for a couple of more (USC spoiled the 1938 Notre Dame season). USC slipped a bit after that (the 40's and 50's)

Don't forget our series with LSU and Georgia in the late 30's and early 40's. We are still undefeated vs the Georgia Dawgs!

I think it is University of Southern California but Santa Clara did finish the season at #6. And was in the midst of a very nice run. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_NCAA_football_rankings

The football coach and AD at my high school, 55 years ago, was a RB on the 1936 HC team.

I think that Georgetown was good in the 30s. My first AD when I began teaching and coaching in the Bronx was Dick King. He starred, (All America ?) at GTown under Coach Lou Little of Columbia fame.

Dick King was not an All American, but Charles "Chubby" Parcells, Father of Bill Parcells, was an honorable mention from Georgetown in 1934.

I think Mr.King played 3 sports at Georgetown: football, basketball and baseball. He was a legendary basketball coach in the NYC CHSAA. UNC national champion Bobby Cunningham played for him at All Hallows.

My Dad went to this game as a kid. "Chuckin'" Charley O'Rourke was able to take a time consuming safety to ensure a 19-18 BC win ovah the Hoyas, breaking GTown's 20 something game winning streak. BC won the Sugar Bowl that year. us17.campaign-archive.com/?u=52dc5380414c50ee23942cee5&id=7dac0cca0bBC beat us 7-0 a couple weeks later....quite an interesting schedule for the 1940 Sader 11, at LSU, a win ovah NYU at Yankee Stadium, Ole Miss at Fitton etc en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Holy_Cross_Crusaders_football_team
