We face a 4-8 Seton Hall team this weekend in South Orange, NJ. Seton Hall grabbed a season opener win @ #12 UNC, but hasn't found a ton of consistent success since (aside from a win or two against extremely weak opponents). They lost 3 out 4 against a very solid Cal Baptist team and then had the final two games of last weekend's series against UCSB canceled after a 2-1 loss in game 1. As we've seen on this board, the Crusaders are struggling mightily on the mound and in the field. I would imagine Seton Hall is going into the weekend expecting to get back on track against our guys. Not sure what realistic expectations are for HC this weekend, but I'd say even just one win would be a good step in the right direction. Note: I stumbled upon this tweet. As is the trend in all of baseball, fastball usage is way down (FB are the worst performing pitch at all levels of college/professional baseball) for a lot of teams this season. HC has followed the trend (good coaching!), but they're the exception to the rule that decreasing FB usage improves positive outcomes. Likely a combination of subpar off-speed, bad command, and below-average fastballs. Hitters are clearly comfortable in box against 90% of our guys.

Win 6-4! 2 wins vs Big 10 and one Big East. Pretty good even if they’re not top programs. All with a patch work pitching staff due to injuries

Crazy to see a pitcher in for the second time today. Even though he pitched 1 inning in earlier game it is not great to bring him back in. No wonder so many pitchers are hurt.

Seton Hall baseball has also had a big drop off from the days of HC’s Ownie Carroll and even HoF Craig Biggio

Lost game 2, 4-3 in 10 innings - the team played better today it would seem

Some 20 year old can't throw 2 innings? When's the last time he pitched before today? That usage is no where near abusive.

Given the nature of our schedule and the inability to play Friday games after the spring break trip due to PL rules, it is routine for our pitchers to appear 2-3 times in two days. Oftentimes those guys will just limit usage during midweeks and give time for ample recovery. If we played a Fri/Sat/Sun like almost every other conference it wouldn’t be an issue.
I remember a couple of guys got 2 saves in one day a few years back. Is it optimal? No. Is it necessary given our particular situation? At times.

In modern day pitching, following the Pitch Smart guidelines, which USA baseball and MLB promote and mostly follow, advise a pitcher 19-22 years old should not pitch in multiple games in a single day. Next day is ok. I am going to do some research, but I bet no one else in Patriot League is doing this. Some of the best pitching minds for training and coaching in the world are about 15 miles from HC, and I bet the coaches and trainers have never spoke with them or visited their facility to learn more about how to develop pitchers. Who takes a job and doesn't want to excel at it and get better?
