Great start to a new era. Whether it was driving over to meet Cousy prior the presser or paying homage to George Blaney, Ralph Willard and the Jesuits...it became very apparent that Coach Paulsen has an understanding & appreciation for his new role & responsibility. I think 'fit' is something that truly matters in college athletics & Paulsen seems to fit Holy Cross like a glove. I really liked the fact that he emphasized that we need to become a team that is tough to play against before we get too ahead of ourselves. Taking care of the basketball, rebounding and executing the fundamentals are more important than playing "fast" and being in "attack-mode". I'm hopeful we learn of the staff in the coming days & took note that he's aggressively pursuing talent to fill existing holes on the roster. Dave looks like this opportunity has energized him...I couldn't help but smile throughout the entire presser. To a better future my friends!

It says a lot about where the program is right now when the only press with a question were Jen Tolland and Kevin Ghel (and maybe one other) - so the sports editor of the school newspaper was not present or if he was he didn't have a question ? the 'that was quick' comment was predictable
has either of the Boston daily papers said word about this hire ?

Let’s give HC credit for handling all aspects of this transition professionally and successfully. Not sure there is regional press anymore here in 2023. Athletics Communications Director Sarah Kirkpatrick kept the session to a half hour as that was all that was needed to get video and sound for the occasion
Coverage has been posted to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and who knows what other channels are out there — where the good news is being shared and amplified many times over.
The Instagram post includes a video that scans the full room
Again — great job all around. GoCrossGo!

It was a little awkward and disappointing that JT had to ask another question after her first because it was crickets. Feel like the school should have known this would happen. Couldn't they have planted someone in there crowd to ask a question or two? Maybe that was Gehl?

I couldn’t make it today, but did get to stream it. Paulsen was by far the best of the coaches I’ve seen and heard when introduced as coach..He said all the right things, and is doing all the things I believe a new coach should do. I like he was about the team, not himself, and he set out goals that are reachable… “Every player who is here 4 years should get to play in theNCAA’s”.
I also liked the former players who were helpful in the interview process, Ronnie Perry and Lorne Davis were mentioned. Kit Hughes is doing it right….
College coaches are hired to be fired. And the Paulsen’s have moved all over. 15 houses in 31 years!

Hoping he rented in the NY Metropolitan area knowing he’d get another head job pretty quickly.

Hopefully he will help put more people in the seats of the Hart Center..Good to see that number, I'd have guessed a lot less before the presser...

YouTube now indicates 775 people have seen the presser at least to some extent — and only 4 hours have passed. Twitter says 10k people have viewed coach’s tweet/photo with Cousy. HC understands communications in this day and age very well
Completely irrelevant that “Boston papers” or “regional press” was seemingly absent. 2023 is not 1978. HC has clearly articulated its vision. A relevant MBB team can help the College spread that word. It really does seem that many forces are aligned in a good direction under President VR’s leadership.
Look forward to supporting the team as it grows. GoCrossGo

Coach Paulsen comes across as sincere, good humored, and respectful. I think that’s because he likely is respectful, sincere and good humored.

One thing Paulsen did say that brought a smile to my face, "Welcome to our practices!" Loved that....and the other thing he said was he needed to put some joy in the players! He said he watched a lot of this past seasons games, and didn't see any joy out there!

I just watched the press conference. Looks like we have a really good guy who in my opinion will be a phenomenal coach. I think Kit hit a home run.

Per Bfoley above “Holy Cross athletics twitter has 12.4k followers so 10k isn't much at all” — some comments:
1. HC athletics on Twitter does indeed have 12.4 followers (let’s assume all genuine and no bots)
2. The specific tweet/photo I was highlighting was not made by HC Athletics but rather made by HCDP on his personal account. His twitter following is 6.4k (and no doubt growing).
3. I am no social media expert — but 10k impressions on his personal account alone within a few hours seems impactful. And of course his single tweet was retweeted by various HC accounts and others and shared on other platforms. Social media is viral like that of course.
4. As you point out the initial news just on the HC athletics twitter site has reached nearly 400k. And that was just one tweet. There have been several other tweets, posts, shares, etc across the range of sites and that will no doubt continue.
5. In due course word will go out through other traditional media and other channels. Bottom line: the College’s communication effort is spot on which will help in the revitalization of the program and the mission of the College
6. The term “press conference” should probably be retired. The intent of today was to get some sound and some pics to share far and wide. Done.

Pretty much all the current players were there. Bo was not... Well, that's what I was wondering and fairly telling. My guess is that anyone there does not have an immediate plan to enter the portal. I thought there was a decent chance Montgomery would reconsider his transfer options. While that door is not closed, this information makes me think it is less probable

If he comes back, we’ll probably be a better team in 2023-24. If he doesn’t, we have a chance to accelerate the rebuild by using his spot next year on a good player with more eligibility left. This assumes DP can bring in 3 good players at this late stage in the game. Won’t be easy but it’s possible.

Certain things are a given when you hire Dave Paulsen including X’s and O’s, integrity, experience, past success, saying the right things (to my ears) , knowledge of PL, etc. My only concern is whether he can overcome our greatest weakness over the last decade (IMHO) and that is recruiting talented players. Not just big men - although that shortcoming has been glaring. The jury’s out on whether this hire addresses our greatest weakness.

High schoolers will be hard to get unless someone de-commits to another school having coaching change HC brought in 3 transfers this year. (Octave, Tse, and Wilbar) but that has been the exception rather than the rule. Maybe in these portal crazy times we live in, that rule is changing
