Jacob deGrom out for the season. The poor guy has started 42 games in the last four season...... All of a sudden he is 35 years old and hasn't had a full season since 2019. He has a career ERA of 2.53 and a career WHIP under 1.0. He has a Rookie of the Year and 2 Cy Youngs but somehow it feels like the career will go down as a huge disappointment. I don't ever cheer for the Mets (its only been 37 years ) but I've always been a fan of this guy. He does have $155 million owed to him over the next five seasons so I guess he has that going for him, which is nice.

When it comes to pitchers, I think that general managers have the expectation (hope?) that the pitcher will repeat his best season over and over if they sign him.

Now folks know why the Mets let him "get away." They knew the strong possibility of this happening.

Asymmetry: Former Dodgers on the current Red Sox roster: Turner, Verdugo, Jansen. Former Red Sox on the current Dodgers roster JD Martinez , Mookie Betts. Obviously, these player transitions were not part of direct trades between the two teams. Hmmnnn!

Watching Sox v Colorado. Daniel Bard on to pitch in the 9th for Colorado. He came up with the Sox in 2009. Had health and control problems and was out of the majors from 2013 to 2020 and was completely out of all baseball for part of it. Was on IL for anxiety this year. He is still struggling with control issues but did his job tonight. I’m impressed by his ability to make it back and pleased he is finally cashing some biggish MLB paychecks www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bardda01.shtml

Wow-amazing story for Bard, returning to the majors after such a long hiatus.
Cousin of John Andreoli of Worcester

Nothing describes the status of baseball in America today better than the caption accompanying the viral John Sterling clip making the rounds: "EIGHTY-FOUR year old broadcaster hit in the face with foul ball "
Hats off to John, he got beaned and kept broadcasting and I don't consider him over the hill or anything but our national pastime is a mature game. I wonder if new arrivals from Latin America are bringing participants in the game with them or mostly participants in soccer?

The Latin community in NYC, young and old, is still playing plenty of baseball. Vast majority Dominican and Puerto Rican. The Mexican pockets are more into soccer. I know the media is trying to paint baseball as a declining sport only watched by older white males but its totally fake news! Take one of those pundits to Casa Del Mofongo in Washington Heights in the middle of December when Dominican winter league games are being live broadcast at the bar and have them tell me baseball is dead. MLB viewership has gone in a positive direction this year, new rules helping IMO.

BUMP- In the past 3 days there have been 4 catchers' interference calls, all verified by replay. I was aware that the team that was the beneficiary of the call got to choose between the result of the batted ball or the batter/runner getting first base. What I found unusual is that if there are runners on and they advance safely past one base, they can stay there. Thought that interference would be treated like a walk or a hit batsman, one base for the runner and only if there was a force play in effect. Happened last night in the Sox game. Runner on first, batter hit a dribbler and was thrown out at first while the runner went to second. However, infield shift had left third uncovered and the runner kept going. Double BUMP- Another catchers' interference call (replay confirmed it in case anyone was doubting it) in a Sox game last night. Gave the Sox a run as the bases were loaded when it happened. Believe in between when I posted this (Game from 4/18) and last night there was an additional instance of this happening. I have never seen so many offenses of this type in a season.

Sterling's call of Larry Bird's 60 point game is the only recording/telecast that's survived and viewable. It's great even though he was the Hawks' broadcaster at the time. Was as into it as the guys on the Hawks' bench near the end of the game.

Sterling has been over the hill for many years. Way too old to be calling baseball games. He should retire and run for President.

Jose Aaraez went 5-5 last night to raise his batting average to .400. That is his third five hit game this month.
QUIZ QUESTION NO. 1
Name the four players who have hit over .380 for a complete season since Teddy Ballgame hit .406 in 1941.
QUIZ QUESTION NO. 2
Name the player who has been at or above .400 at the latest point in the season during the 2000s.

I'm going to say that Ted hit .380 since Ted hit .406 (and did so at a fairly advance age)

Ted Williams had a very big batting average year in the late 1950’s A couple of years before he retired . Was probably 40 YO at the time. Has to be him

Is Mauer the answer to #2 ? Nope. And it isn't John Olerud (107 games) or Larry Walker (96 games) because both of those performances were before 2000.

Clue on the second question: This player was last over .400 in his team's 91st game in 2000.
