Sterling has been over the hill for many years. Way too old to be calling baseball games. He should retire and run for President. Ouch.🙂

I could've sworn Todd Helton was hitting .400 into late July or early August in 200, which would be 100+ games into season. I think he ended up around .370. Todd was at .395 at this point but was knocking on the door of .400 almost into September. The article below is from 8/23/2000. www.espn.com/mlb/news/2000/0823/699555.html

Did some further digging on Helton's campaign in 2000. Believe it or not, the last day of the season where he finished a game hitting .400 or better was June 10th. Despite knocking on the door into September, he never finished a day after this above .400. He did finish the day on August 18th hitting .399. Perhaps Todd went over .400 for an at bat during that game? I seem to remember watching Sports Center and this happening. Below is his batting log from the 2000 season. He actually entered the month of September at .395 before falling to .372. That's probably why I remember Helton's flirtation with .400 being a much bigger story than Nomar that year, even though Nomar held the .400 mark later in the year. Helton was right below the .400 mark late in the year but stayed under the #. www.baseball-almanac.com/players/hittinglogs.php?p=heltoto01&y=2000

When Williams* hit .406, the BA in the entire AL was .266.
Last year, the BA in MLB (interleague play didn't exist in 1941, so what the NL hit wasn't relevant, IMHO) was .243.
In my mind, if someone cracks 380, they've had as great a year as Williams did.
*side note- always thought it was interesting that in the stretch in 1941 Joe DiMaggio got a hit in 56 consecutive games, Williams had a better BA. Both incredible accomplishments.

He is one of the most exciting players to enter the game in decades. We know what has happened to the Reds W-L record since he came up (not all due to him of course) and I’ll bet attendance has gone up dramatically.

Useless baseball fact: The Red Sox are the first team in the history of the game to go into the All Star game in last place and also have a better than .500 record. Obviously not even possible until divisional play in 1969, but still an interesting bit of trivia

Sox bad baserunning is reaching epic proportions. Sunday vs the Mets, they had a runner thrown out by the left fielder at second, third and home. Only the play at home was a reasonable risk. However, that runner, Duran, subsequently got picked off first. Then last night, they hit into a triple play, two blunders on that play. Somehow, they won both games,!

Worth noting, albeit belatedly, what Shohei Ohtani did in yesterday's double-header in Detroit. In the opener, he pitched a one-hit shutout; in the second, he hit two bombs. He's on track now to win 15 games and hit 61 HRs
Not of this earth.

Holy Cross grad Declan Cronin is called up to The Show with White Sox Worcester Telegram & Gazette
Holy Cross graduate Declan Cronin, who has pitched for the Triple-A Charlotte Knights all season, has been called up to the Chicago White Sox. Right-handed pitcher Declan Cronin, a 2019 graduate of Holy Cross, was called up Friday by the Chicago White Sox.
A Crusader has not played in the majors since 1977, when Mike Hegan (Milwaukee Brewers) and Mike Pazik (Minnesota Twins) concluded their professional careers.
Cronin was drafted by the White Sox in 2019 in the 36th round. In four years in the minors, he has appeared in 145 games, going 10-6 with a 3.86 earned run average. Cronin, who received an invitation to the White Sox' major league spring training in 2023, has spent the entire season with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights, with 41 relief appearances.
In his four-year career at Holy Cross, Cronin struck out 156, 10th-most in program history, in 177-2/3 innings over 54 appearances.
Cronin earned All-Patriot League first-team honors in 2019 after recording a 6-4 record in 15 appearances (71 innings) with 10 starts. In that span, he had a 4.06 ERA with 61 strikeouts. In Patriot League play, Cronin had the second-best ERA in the conference at 2.70 with a 5-1 record over 46-2/3 innings.
The White Sox are scheduled to host the Cleveland Guardians in a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday.

BUMP- In the past 3 days there have been 4 catchers' interference calls, all verified by replay. I was aware that the team that was the beneficiary of the call got to choose between the result of the batted ball or the batter/runner getting first base. What I found unusual is that if there are runners on and they advance safely past one base, they can stay there. Thought that interference would be treated like a walk or a hit batsman, one base for the runner and only if there was a force play in effect. Happened last night in the Sox game. Runner on first, batter hit a dribbler and was thrown out at first while the runner went to second. However, infield shift had left third uncovered and the runner kept going. Double BUMP- Another catchers' interference call (replay confirmed it in case anyone was doubting it) in a Sox game last night. Gave the Sox a run as the bases were loaded when it happened. Believe in between when I posted this (Game from 4/18) and last night there was an additional instance of this happening. I have never seen so many offenses of this type in a season. Last time I'll mention this, I promise. The Sox broadcast the other night mentioned the tidbit that the number of catchars' interference calls in 2023 has already exceeded the all time record for a season. Around 80 to date. Said it had something to do with the way catchers are trained nowadays to receive/frame the pitches.

It’s middle of the pack at best. Maybe not that good.
