Ky, Do not forget track and field The pride of Manhasset, Nassau County, NY Still the only Long Island HS basketball player with back to back 50 point games- 55 and 53.
I had the distinct honor of watching him play against the Giants multiple times. I rooted for Sam Huff every time, but ultimately knew the very strong Giants defense ( Andy Robustelli, Rosy Grier, Jim Katcavage, Dick Modjewleski(sp), Jimmy Patton, Dick Lynch, Emlen Tunnel, etc.) would fail once again. The combination of power, speed and relentless effort that has never been equaled.

L.A. Times said he was 6'2" and 232 lbs. While I never saw Brown play in person, I unfortunately saw Larry Csonka and he was HUGE and bigger than virtually all of the Crusader linemen. I knew Brown was big but 232 pounds and probably a lot faster than Csonka would have made him almost impossible for one player to bring down. Was he the RB who when asked why he was always slow to get up after he was tackled said that was because if he did get injured, he wanted to mask it? Great LAX player on Long Island. Acting? meh, so-so. Hey, you can't have it all. Stealing from the L.A. Times: When he left SU, he had 10 varsity letters, 3 each in football and lacrosse and 2 each in basketball and track.

People talk about Bo Jackson and others, but Jim Brown might have been the greatest athlete who ever lived.

Bo Jackson was great in 2 sports. Jim Brown was the best ever in football and lacrosse, as well as very good in basketball, baseball and track and field. If Syracuse had let him start in hoops, he would have had a 3rd letter there. He won 13 HS letters in 5 sports.

Let no one doubt a younger Jim Brown would have been as great today. With his size, strength, speed, elusiveness, smarts and relentless play he would have easily & successfully competed today. He truly was the greatest football player I ever saw. And, I am not getting lost in delusional nostalgia.

When Newsday was ranking the greatest male athletes to grow up on Long Island they suggested Brown should occupy the first three spots. That's how much greater he was than the other guys (and those other guys include Yaz, John Mackey, Julius Erving, Craig Biggio, etc.). Speaking of Yaz, I think he broke one of Jim Brown's LI basketball scoring records.

Speaking of Yaz, I think he broke one of Jim Brown's LI basketball scoring records. Possible but neither is currently in the top 18 on Long Island for their careers. Yaz scored in the 40s a few times. As mentioned above, Brown had back to back 50s. Brown still holds the Long Island single season scoring record average-39.6 Third is Wally Szczerbiak.-36.6 HC’s Denis Ahern is twelfth- 32.6 Yaz’ best was 31.4

People talk about Bo Jackson and others, but Jim Brown might have been the greatest athlete who ever lived. He qualified for the U S. Olympic team in decathlon, but didn't compete because he wanted to focus on his football career. I don't blame him. The NFL pays and there probably wasn't too much endorsement money for a black Olympic athlete in the fifties.

I saw him play a number of times...f'ing amazing. May his soul rest in peace with my thanks for all of the time I rooted for the Giants to stop him...and was repeatedly frustrated. I believe he was indeed the GOAT.

I believe he was indeed the GOAT. We got the Giants games up here then also. Jim Brown would typically carry two or three guys a few yards before he was hauled down.

Jim Brown retired at age 29 and led the league in rushing, of course, scored 21 touchdowns (14 game season) and was MVP that last season. He never missed a game in his NFL career.

While there are all sorts of metrics to measure athletic greatness I do think of Jim Thorpe and Jim Brown as the top US male athletes of all time.

Some say Ernie Davis was better. Would have been something to see both he and Brown together in the Browns’ backfield!

As I recall, Davis was a very different runner. He relied mostly on speed and elusiveness. Brown on power, elusiveness and speed. Of course, we will never know for sure, but Davis did not dominate and punish defenders the way that Brown did.

At 6-2 232 Jim Brown was the size of many of the linemen in the league. Extrapolating that to today, think of a 6-5 280 pound running back who was the fastest man on the field as well.

That is a good comparison to a "modern" player with physical skills and attributes similar to theway Brown compared to the other NFL players back in his day. He was truly amazing.
