There is a bit of buzz surrounding St. John's new recruits. Expectations are high. Don't know if it's hype or the new guys are really good. TBT I predicted way back, RP would coach SJ. It's a match made in heaven or ?

I thought of Pitino Saturday night.
Miami Heat, like U of Kentucky in 1992, didn't guard the inbounds passer on a last second play....and got burned!
Different spot on the floor for the inbounds, yes, but the way Max Strus was leaning towards Tatum, White had a clear path to the hoop for a tip in.
Alternatively, if Marcus Smart had wanted to, he could have immediately passed the ball back to White for a wide open shot.

Possibly, but it ya' never know what would've happened with a pass, catch, dribble or two, and the final shot. Smart's quick turn-around nearly went in, and White flashing to the hoop and kind of just instantaneously pushing the rebound in without actually taking the time to catch and shoot was the stuff of legends.

The legend is dying on the vine right now. Miami 58-43 in game seven.

Miami wins going away...Bucknell alum Muscala gets on the scoreboard with a garbage time 3 pointer.
Excluding the handful of big Knicks playoff over that time, tonight was the most excited I'd been to watch an NBA game since the 2004 Pistons-Lakers Finals.

I wish Muscala had played himself into the rotation instead of out of it (he simply did not play well after his first game or two); another shooter out there turned out to be a real need.

Can we shift this recent diversion back to the topic ?

Can we shift this recent diversion back to the topic ? Somewhat related to the topic, the Red Storm has one away game in its non-con schedule.

Pitino has taken the slogan on the side of the Statue of Liberty to heart.

Maybe Rick would be willing to call the St. John's/Holy Cross tilt the "Ralph Willard Classic" and keep the series going during his tenure with the Red Storm.

Can we shift this recent diversion back to the topic ? The D1 Docket is a website that tracks non-con schedule info. Last time I checked, it only had exempt tourney info on teams since hardly anyone had announced their OOC game schedule.

When will the DCU Center get into the exempt tournament business? Worcester's population is up to 205,918 as of 2001. Should be a good bet if decent competition and quality sponsorship can be secured. The late October, 2021 ice breaker college hockey tournament bombed with only 1653 and 2052 attending on Friday and Saturday night but NCAA tournament preliminary rounds in both BB and hockey have done well there.
I don't think the Ice Breaker had a high profile mainstream primary sponsor or I would have remembered it if it was the Verizon or Bank of America Ice Breaker tournament.
I went to a UMass/South Carolina game at the Centrum (now the DCU Center) during the Bruiser Flint era when there was still a half life of enthusiasm from the great Calipari/Camby teams. It turned out everybody in our section had free tickets from entering a drawing at their local Cumberland Farms convenience store, one of the game's sponsors.
That was great marketing by UMass or the DCU marketing staff or both. The sponsors surely got a volume discount on the tickets, but the attendees are still part of the paid attendance.

Worcester hasn't hosted NCAA Regional Hoops since 2005 and will NOT host through the 2025-2026 tourney. The tournament has moved onto bigger and better facilities.

Maybe so, but you see an awfully lot of empty seats at those facilities during the opening rounds.

MVP Arena (formerly Times Union Center) hosted this past season. That arena is pretty dumpy, just like the DCU. As I recall, wasn't the bigger issue there not being enough hotels in the area to accommodate eight teams (plus traveling parties)?

Last time I was at the DCU Center was 2016, I believe. Compared to when I was there in 2005 (and 1992) for the Dance, it had backslid considerably, IMHO. Anything done to it since then?
Place has to be a lot "spiffier" to make up for the lesser capacity.

Yes, the hotel issue is the main reason that we have not been able to host the Big Dance first round.

In the past, full-service hotels in Westborough and Marlborough were counted in Worcester's tally.
Hope is that with Chuck Baker now heading the NCAA he puts a good word in for Worcester. And I believe that the arena and city still bid every cycle.

Any additional spiffing would be welcome of course. Paying off Polar Park may be siphoning funds away from upgrades to other City owned facilities.

The DCU Center is dated, the city has few hotel rooms, and Worcester has no airport with lots of carriers and flights. There are many other northeast cities that easily beat Worcester on these items. Nearby Providence, which has hosted recent NCAA tournaments, did a major renovation of it's arena, offers 16 Hotels with over 3,000 rooms within city limits (more hotels and rooms also available nearby in Warwick by airport), and is close to an airport that is also connected to downtown by a short rail trip (MBTA). There are also many restaurants, bars, and a mall within blocks of the arena for fans.
