DC just issued a Code Purple because of the Canadian wildfire smoke. The Code Purple is for fine particulate matter (2.5 microns). 2.5 microns is about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair. Also smaller than the size of aerosols that help transmit the COVID virus. These codes follow a topology of risk created by the U.S. EPA. I suspect this is the first time for a Code Purple issuance in DC. Even more foreboding is code Maroon. I Googled whether a Code Maroon alert had ever been issued in the United States and found no reference that one had. (Philadelphia's air quality briefly deteriorated to Maroon levels last night, but no alert.) Anywayz, the Purples and Maroons will meet in Chestnut Hill in a few months. Hopefully, Canada will have stopped burning by then. On a cheerier climate note, there is still 20 feet of snow on the upper terrain at Mammoth ski resort in California (about a five hour drive from LA). The resort is promising skiing in July. Really, really remarkable how much snow remains in the southern Sierra. As of June 7, the snow water equivalent is 425 percent of normal in the southern Sierra (where Mammoth is.) In the central Sierra (e.g., Tahoe / Donner area) the snow water equivalent yesterday was 17.2 inches; or170+ inches of back-breaking heavy, wet snow)

Belmont Park cancelled racing today and we can only hope this miasma clears out by Saturday's Belmont Stakes day

When I saw that in NJ we were well above 400 yesterday, I understood why the Yankees posponed playing their game. I love the smell of a campfire, but not when it is in Canada and I can smell wood burning at my front door.

Here east of the Connecticut River it is all the way down to 33. Situation resolved, at least for now.

I almost fell out of my chair when I read that NYC had measured a fine particulate value of over 900. I went looking for the exact number, I thought I remembered it as being around 970-980 which was off the charts. I finally found the source which was an article in the NY Times, which had an accompanying graph. I finally found the article, which published this accompanying note: "Editors’ note: After publication of this article, the city revised its pollution measurements on June 9, lowering them by nearly 50 percent. The article and chart have been updated to reflect this change." The revised highest peak value is 460. The record high for the United States was set in Portland Oregon in 2020 at 465 average daily value.. An important caveat: record-keeping only began in 1999, and peak value is not synonymous with daily average value. www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/06/08/upshot/new-york-city-smoke.html
