So, my oral surgeon who I've been seeing all too frequently over the last 5-7 years, has a second floor office in Cranston and overlooks in some windows, Rt. 37, an east-west highway. As an aside, he is as graduate and on the Assumption University Board of Directors and his wife is a '78 Holy Cross grad, so our discussions center around our schools, Worcester, etc. when we not disagreeing about Covid vaccinations. He had to "top" me when Vince Rougeau, first non-Jesuit as HC president came up. He told me (I recalled in the back of my mind) that the new Assumption president is not only non-clergy, non-Catholic but Jewish but apparently ascended from the provost position.
All aside from the topic. While driving on Rt. 37, you can see very tall poles. My wife and my avid golfer neighbor thought they were for wind turbines. My observation was they were too closely spaced and any blades would be crashing into each other (sparing the thousands of birds that are allegedly killed by them). My guess was for a golf driving range.
Sooo, while waiting for the surgeon, one of his nurses motioned for me to go the window and confirmed it was a golf facility and said "ask Dr. S how much it costs. He's a 'business man.'" In he comes and that's the first thing he wants to talk about. He's appalled how much to build it.
I asked him (see picture), just to distract him from his target: "Hey, is that a Joe Manchin coal mine out there?" He responds: "No, but let's just say there's 'stuff' in those piles." Me: "are you saying pollutants?" He sort of shrugs and when I ask where they will put it, he says he hasn't a clue and I suggest "maybe dump it in Narragansett Bay and try to kill us all?" He tells me this is Top Flite's first one in New England and they are building a second one in Norwood, MA and it took 12 years to get the project approved there.
Back again to the subject. He asks me how much I think the project costs, so I high ball it on purpose, "well, probably the cost of s decent sports stadium, $250 million?" He tells me, no, $100 million. "And how are they going to make that money back?!" Me: "Easy, just charge $50 for a bucket of balls." I say as I leave from my visit, "I expect after you get my money for this implant that you'll buy me a bucket of balls."
What I didn't think of until later was that it's probably another Saudi golf "investment." (Yeah, click on the picture to enlarge and get the right side up)
