... and a distant last - What is the story with this program ? - the men's coach told me that our stadium is absolutely the best natural turf field around and helps attract recruits - why no progress with the women ? Their league record in the last 3 seasons is: 3-17-2

Most schools have four coaches now with only three being paid as the goalie coach is likely a volunteer based on her resume...the interesting thing is Holy Cross has three men coaching the women's team as we are seeing less men across women's sports.

The 23-24 NCAA sports year starts tonight hundreds of women’s soccer contests - I don’t think you can find a more one-sided match than HC at RU - wonder what the backstory is with this unlikely matchup

I don't know the back story but glad HC gets a chance to test itself against some strong opponents before league play as well as some opponents with a decent chance of winning against.

I note that there are 5 residents of the Garden State on the HC roster. Beautiful looking soccer stadium. My state tax dollars at work!

State of the art is an ever evolving concept. Smith Soccer Stadium is currently superior to the vast majority of venues used in US NCAA Collegiate soccer. As many are well aware, upgrades have been conceptually designed and provided, and should be implemented by the end of the decade.

2-0 was the final Jr Julia Walsh (transfer from Assumption) made 9 saves so she kept the score respectable and maybe will be a big addition to our squad

That is a most respectable start to the season.

I was thinking about players trying to win 50/50 balls out of the air where one would think that the fouls would be more evenly divided.

‘Most respectable’ ? Really 2 sog and 16 fouls - this means our ladies simply could not run with RU and had to get chippy to try and slow them down This result indicates nothing about our chances to improve this season

One of Rutgers' goals was a penalty kick.
Physical defense = fouls

My plan is to be at the game Sunday against Northeastern. Let’s see how they do then.

"Most respectable’ Really? this means our ladies simply could not run with RU and had to get chippy to try and slow them down;
So you think that holding a top Big 10 team with unlimited resources (i.e., scholarships) and hundreds of millions in Big 10 money to 2 goals is not respectable? Shots are a misleading statistic; focus instead on shots on goal (10 to 2 in favor of Rutgers). Strategic fouling is part of the game and 14 fouls in 90 minutes is not a lot. If your argument is that Rutgers is better than Holy Cross, then you won't receive much disagreement but to say that a 2-0 loss and holding them scoreless for the final 77 minutes is not respectable and will not help them going forward is just a terrible take.

Giving up one 2 goals (one on a penalty kick) is not bad against a strong RU team. What, if anything, did you expect to see in this first game of the year?

Made the trek from Princeton last night up Rt. 1 to the Rutgers athletic complex. This was my first visit since 2018. Yucak stadium is right next to the football stadium. Good lights and great looking natural turf. I would say there were about 60-75 HC fans in attendance.
Despite the best efforts of my Argentine wife to educate me about the sport, my knowledge of soccer is quite limited. But to my untrained eye, the RU players were faster, bigger, stronger and had superior footwork. It was women vs. girls. Yes there were a lot of fouls, and coach Graham had an animated chat with one of the refs early in the game. HC's goalie played well, and made a beautiful save on a penalty kick. I left with about 19 minutes left as the game was never in doubt. HC just could not mount any sort of offense. Not sure what the implications are for the rest of the season, but the team played hard.
As an aside, I noticed the indoor practice bubble next to the football stadium was the same one I noticed when I went to a game in 2018. I can safely say that the HC indoor facility is superior.

Well, that indoor facility is the nation's largest air-supported indoor structure. It has a four lane track in it also which is something Holy Cross does not have. Plus, it only cost 1.2 million. www.epicbuilds.com/portfolio/busch-campus-indoor-practice-conditioning-facility/A new indoor football facility is in the works at Rutgers www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/2023/07/rutgers-pat-hobbs-shares-update-on-indoor-football-practice-facility-timeline-for-master-plan-reveal.html
